Cool 71 Pick up, 3 speed converted to floor.

A beautiful friend of mine just picked up a 71 Chevy C10 that I get the pleasures of working on. This truck looks to have a 307 and a 3 speed, it was at one time a shift on the column truck. The last owners converted it to a floor shift deal with a cheap after market floor shifter. I am dealing with this as I go.

The question I have is when a guy does a conversion like this the shifter is directly in the way of the speedo cable. What can be done to get the cable to clear this cheap after market shifter?

I don't think I can talk her into converting it back to an on the column set up and I do not have any of the old parts or shift lever. I was told all is easy to find other then the lever. That said, I feel the only option is to make this floor shifter work.

Can any one help out this Chevy Newbie? Any suggestions or new ideas are welcome.
Thank you so much.
Rico

Good man, posting pics of your friend! Don't know what to tell ya' about the speedo. I generally do without (works when it wants to which isn't often.) BTW

BTW you may be able to find a better fitting floor shift?

Re: 71 Pick up, 3 speed converted to floor.

Wow! What a nice friend you have!

I was working on a somewhat similar issue today and I knew I should have taken pics! Anyway, if you look closely on the sheet metal that holds the actual shifter to the trans, you'll see a series of holes. These holes are there so that you can position the shifter in several different locations over a length of an 8" area. You might have to cut a bigger hole in your cab, but if you need to move the shifter back or forward you can. Look closely and the shifter is held on the sheet metal by 2 screws. Unbolt these 2 screws and move it to where you want it. Good luck, and I'll try to take pics of mine when the sky quits raining here, to show you what I mean.

Re: 71 Pick up, 3 speed converted to floor.

On my floor shift 3 speed, I had to notch the shifter bracket with a die grinder so the cable would clear enough to screw onto the trans. The floor shift bracket is directly in the way of the cable screwing on otherwise.

Your friend is quite pretty, but I don't know about that thing on her right shoulder though.

Re: 71 Pick up, 3 speed converted to floor.

Okay, here are some pics that I took today.
The red circles show the holes on the mounting rails that allow one to move the shifter back or forward. Also you'll notice the 2 bolts that hold the shifter on the rails. Although it's kinda hard to see due to the picture angle, my speedo cable is close but I have no trouble with the levers hitting it. On mine, I'm more worried about them hitting the E-brake cable and possible causing some calamity. I'll figure that out when I come to it.

Hope this helps you out!

Re: 71 Pick up, 3 speed converted to floor.

I can see what you are saying Brad, on Robin's truck the levers are the problem, they hit the cable. She is getting tired of messing with it already but i will try and get some pictures to show you what I am seeing.

Thank you,
Mr. Rico

Re: 71 Pick up, 3 speed converted to floor.

Welcome to the board. And let your lady friend that we love having truck chicks around here.
I'll have to look, but I think I have a little gear adapter that is an elbow. I don't know if you have the room there, but I have this little deal that turns 90 degrees. It plugs in like the cable would, then the turn, then you screw the cable to the other end. I think it actually modifys the speedo speed, not really sure, but I'll see if I can't locate it and look into that a bit more.
