Well it was going good....

I have been driving Tootsie Roll for awhile now and noticed the tranny was acting funny shifting weird. So yesterday I dropped the tranny fluid, filter and replaced with all fresh. Took a drive and it was fine. Well today I was driving down the block to work and the tranny was slipping big time. The engine would rev up and the tranny would try to keep up. It's lasted through 3 engines and sitting in a pasture for almost 2 years for a total of 10 years I decided to head back home and call the tranny shop. I called my tranny guru here from when I had it last replaced. He has a small shop out in BFE but everybody knows who he is in tranny business. He said if I could get it to him today he would have it out by Friday afternoon. He was busy but he would sneak me in.

I drove it out there and on the highway to his shop and the truck was slipping the whole way. It would rev up and finally catch but then would dlip again. This goes on and on the whole trip. I get there and head into the "office" part of the shop where he's building a tranny. The other guys are tearing them out and installing them. He recognizes me and was surprised to see me still driving the same truck. Same truck different setup I said. This time better engine and gears. He told me for a built TH350 installed with converter stalled if needed at 2200-2500 (what I have now) would be $550. He said it would hold up to the engine and gears I have with no problem and give a warranty for it. So my Las Vegas $$$ for gambling went to the truck but I'll have a ride soon. Seems like whenever it starts going good something like this happens.

That isn't a bad price. I had my TH350 rebuilt last year and payed $995 + tax and it came with a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty. What part of Texas are you in?

You're right Jon. I'm just glad I was able to limp the truck to the shop instead of having to pay for a wrecker.

Good price--how much could you have saved by doing the R&R yourself? I cut $150 off my last tranny rebuild by pulling and replacing it myself. . .

I would but I don't have the time or a way to haul it over there with the K-5 not legal yet. I would have done it myself but this way I know I can get the full warranty on the tranny as well. Some places won't warranty it unless they install it.

On my suburban i pulled and replaced the transfer case and 700r4 myself. That saved about 200 bucks. I had my transmission completely rebuilt + torque converter for $450. Mine was rebuilt using stock components, but $550 sounds like a really good price for rebuilding and the labor of pulling/installing.

I have heard that replacing the fluid can actualy do more harm. Something to the fact that the seals get used to the fluid that is in there and then when you change the fluid it can cause the seals to get worse.

I was told this by a guy at work that used to own a transmition shop.

Sounds weird to me...anyone know anything about this?

It happened to me. I had a ranger that always went into reverse slowly. It took about a second, but it always went. I changed the fluid when I had a leaky pan, and it lost reverse the next day. The transmission shop said I had a leaky seal that was partially clogged, and the fesh fluid cleaned it out.

I has happened to one of my oldest friends, and to my father-in-law as well.

Never thought about that. I'm guessing it would work like a inline filter where the cooler lines flow into it then to the cooler?

BTW: I had even added a auxilary cooler awhile back. Don't know if it made it last longer or not since that's been a few years ago.

I bought a permacool remote transmission filter kit from summit ran about 80.00 but it did come with everything and a temp gauge. Its just like your engine oil filter but for your transmission fluid. It will filter way more than the normal filter (in pan) will be able to filter out. This is a mod I would do again for sure. To me its better protection for the transmission life.

Only thing I don't like about it is that it uses rubber hose to splice into the cooler lines. It is high heat and temperature hose but I have had some trouble with it getting it to seal up. But you are dealing with high pressure of the transmission 80-180 psi roughly. So on that I would go steel braided hoses to connect the transmission and remote filter.
