Power Steering Gear Box Options?
see ten and I were talking this weekend about his quick ratio steering box he has on his truck and he mentioned that he thought the same thing could be achieved by some newer model gear boxes. Anybody have any idea which ones? or are we wrong?

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
I know 1980 - 87 full size truck boxes are, I think it might even include any of the 73-87 boxes from the fullsize trucks.

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
I'm interested in this too as I am in the process of wanting to install a power gear-box and a quicker ratio box that is a BOLT UP would be great. So far all I hear is that the fittings are metric o-ring vs. the old type.
Anybody have a years recommendation? We can always have hoses made with the proper fittings to match old-style pump to new-style boxes. |

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
73 - 87 boxes work, and they are variable rate boxes, but as far as I know, there are no quick ratio boxes from another aplication that'll work.

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
OK I'll jump in with both feet.I would like Rack and pinion but I haven't seen any except the new one out that uses a thinner aftermarket crossmember. When looking at the original crossmember I thought the lower control arm mounts would make an Ideal point to put a bracket to locate said Rack.It would probably require more than just those 2 mounting points.Has anyone seen one or heard of a "bolt-in" type system to do this.

some one came on here about 3 years ago asking about interest, he was looking into making a bolt in R&P unit... no clue what ever happened with the idea.

Andy-Explain Variable Rate Box?
Mine is leaking at where the steering shaft goes into the box. I actually ahve a later model front end on my truck so somebody has already changed over the power steering pump. Hell, I might already have a 73-87 gear box.

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
It's hard to explain... think, slow steering at center... and faster steeering past a 1/4 turn from center. You really wouldn't notice it onless you pay real close attention... or go from one to another.

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
I was reading about guys with first gen camaros using 3rd gen camaro quick ratio boxes, but have no idea if they'll just bolt in.
I'm going to be replacing mine soon since it leaks. |

Camaro boxes are inside the frame, trucks are outside.
Wouldn't work. |

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
I have an 84 Burb box on my longhorn.....love it. It took 1 full turn out of the lock to lock,as compaired to the old 69 box. The meteric fittings were an easy "hassel", just used the hoses & fitting (rear of the pump) from the Burb. I really like the feel of the steering, & will say that that old 133" longhorn is easier to park than the kids Ferd ranger! Im not sure why, but it takes some doing to turn that Ferd around? I am 2wd, lowered, with 15"(basically stock height tires for a 1/2 ton), & will say the box was a nice addition to my old truck, & noticable...... L

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
I just would like to know when I go get the 73-87 gear box, am I upgrading or am I getting the same? I guess I won't know until I do it. Either way I don't have a problem with my steering just don't like the small leak. Figured if there was an upgrade on a newer style gear box would do it while the old one is out.

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
Yellow 69 - If your steering is now 4+ turns lock to lock you probably have the original box. The newer and variable ratio box will be in the 3+ lock to lock area. Lock to lock means how many turns hard left all the way to hard right.
Hope this helps a little bit - Bob

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Options?
If you have a small leak, put you some trans-x in your pump. It stopped the leak on my pump. It's worth a shot.
