What is this stuff?
While dealing with some surface rust on top of my windshield frame I ran into a hardened putty (it looks like the glazing in old-style house windows) in the trough where the top seals to the windshield. It's obviously there to improve the seal but did it come from the factory? Either way it has to come out so I can remove any rust beneath it. If it is supposed to be there, any suggestions on where I can buy some?

It is body seam sealer. The technology years ago is not as good as it is now so it cracks out and dries up. When you get the seam all cleaned up and rustproofed, epoxy primer first and then use a good urethane self-leveling seam sealer and you will be very happy.
