Stumped two auto shops....
Hi all, I'm new here and though I might post the situation I am going through right now. To start with, I recently bought a burban (second one) w/72,000 original miles on it. It is a 1988 V10 and ran great when I bought it. At this point in time it has been in the second auto shop for about two weeks now. The problems I was having are: when idleing it was reving up and then dying down to about 500rpm, then reving again, then dying down. It did this hot or cold. When I tried to drive it it is pulsing off the start and through exceleration while the whole time it feels like the e-brake is on and it is pulling a 5000 pound anchor. I have had a little experiance w/ a 87 V20 but I fixed all of its problems. This is the list of stuff checked, tried, and replaced:
Fuel pump, fuel filter, TBI gasket, injectors, distributor, cap, rotor button, plugs, wires, EGR valve, Throttle Position sensor, temp sensor, idle air intake control, O2 sensor, checked pins 15 and B on ECU connection, fresh gas. The code it keeps throwing is "O2 sensor - lean exhaust". Only thing we have not tried is a new ECU. Anything will help. Thanks. |

swap the ecm with the one in your '87. It should be the same one.

Re: Stumped two auto shops....
Sorry, my bad. This is the second burban I have owned. I sold the V20 a while back unfortionatly.
The "V10" is a model number, stands for 1/2 ton 4x4, V20 is 3/4 ton 4x4. I'm not sure how to check for a plugged exhaust. The only thing I know is to take the cat off and gut it to see if it helps. Is there another way? When a ECU goes bad does it just stop working or can it still work but just give the motor bad management? Last edited by shift01; 06-09-2006 at 12:43 PM. |

Hi, and welcome
You might try posting this also in the "Engine and Trans" section. There'sa whole slough of folks who can help you there (not me, usually ), esp since this isn't a Burb-specific question. I seem to recall someone else had a problem like that. Brian |

Re: Stumped two auto shops....
i have the same problem in my 87 burb, i hope you can figure it out soon. I bought it and it hesitates while you give it gas, but when you start it up it revs up then dies down, then repeats that...once while backing out of the driveway it died on me. I have yet to see how the new plugs/wires help it cause i have it all taken apart right now to clean the engine and try to replace anything broken/bad (i bought it with 200K miles on it) mine is an 87 350 tbi. I am going to try to spray the carb with some cleaner tho to see if that helps when i put it all back together.

Re: Stumped two auto shops....
If it's TBI then it wouldn't have a carb has it been retrofited to carburation?
Welcome to the board from WV Shane

Re: Stumped two auto shops....
It has a carb, but its TBI i guess in 87 they used injecters. I'm not a mechanic but i'm learning as i go along. Its pretty fun trying diffrent things but its pricey lol. thanks, i'll check back soon for the fix.

Re: Stumped two auto shops.FIXED!!!!
Ok it has been fixed. I had a ruptured fuel line in the gas tank. The foamish type rubber hose that goes from the fuel pump to the neck going out of the gas tank had a split in it. It was shooting the gas back in the tank.
