A couple stepside bed questions?
Finally got the rear bumper back on the truck and the fenders are almost ready for paint. I ran into a little problem when I was trying to put the rear brackets on the truck....they were hitting the back panel of the bed before the bolt holes lined up. I came to the conclusion that the bed needed to be raised. So I raised it the "redneck way" (see pics ) It looks better where it is now, since there are no body lines to match to the cab I never knew the bed was too low. How does this happen? The bed was never off the truck. I spent many hours years ago removing the crusty old bolts with a grinder. I remember there being 1/4" rubber pads, but that's it? I raised the bed about 1", the minimum to get it to clear the bumper brackets and give the tailgate room to drop without hitting the bumper. The brackets only go one way, so what gives?

Re: A couple stepside bed questions?
My other question is for the bumper.... is it supposed to look like this? I swapped brackets around, but they only go one way. This is the "straightest" I could get the bumper (I put shims on the top side). Is this how they are supposed to look or is this another after market screw up?

Re: A couple stepside bed questions?
Here is a picture of how the rear bumper brackets are set up on mine. It's a 68 stepside.
Hope this helps. Last edited by Chevyman680063; 09-05-2006 at 07:21 PM. |

Re: A couple stepside bed questions?
Crap, thanks for the post guys! It looks like I used the wrong bolt hole for the back bolt which would let the bumper drop and straighten up some! I would have never imagined the bumper brackets were supposed to be "crooked." My truck had rigged up 73-87 brackets on it before
Looks like I can drop my bed back down now!
