Question for the ultra-low

How much clearance in the trailing arm xmember did you add for your driveshaft?

I didnt add any....only to find out now that I have the body back on that I need to add about 1.5".....doh

Rats! You were two of the guys I was figuring would have the dimension I just picked up the above xmember, and want to raise and gusset that loop, but am not sure what's a reasonable distance. I've already got a 5" notch in the back of the cab, but can't find the actual needed height since the driveshaft bangs the stock xmember. Maybe I'll just go nutso and take it up to just under the seat.

That's what I would suggest. Take it up as high as the trucks floorpan will allow.

What if you cut the top off of the drive shaft loop on the stock crossmember to allow your driveshaft to come all the way up, then take your measurement? Or, are you trying not to destroy the stock one? Just a thought.

I'm making my own crossmember (my trailing arms are on the outside of the frame so I don't need the arm mounts) and will have the same problem. I have it mocked up right now and could probably give you a measurement. I'm running a 235 with the stock 3-speed, and a 12-bolt rearend. BTW my chassis is set up to lay frame.

Floorpan? We don't need no stinkin' floorpan...

I'm already up into the cab. I'm trying to avoid the bandwidth required to install, measure, cut, remove, mod, reinstall... since I'm upside down in other projects at the moment If someone could get me a measurement from the center bottom of the xmember to the floorpan, that would help a lot. I think the dip in the center of the stock xmember is about 1" below the rest of the xmember... so I could take that measurement, subtract the 1" (since the ECE unit is flat there), then measure up from the floor to the bottom of the seat. Voila.

Digicam is dead, otherwise pics would make this easier for me to explain.

There are a couple of pics in my dropmember thread that show how much of the floor needs to be removed for driveshaft clearance to lay frame on 29" tall tire. I have more on my computer at work I can get you tomorrow. It isn't much help as for an exact measurement for your x-member, but might be helpful?

XXL- I've got 7" from the bottom of the framerail to the bottom of the cab sheetmetal. Maybe 3/8-1/2" difference depending on your body mounts...

I have the ECE xmember and it touches the cab floor as designed. I don't know if that info helps you any, but I tried!

If you go with Porter's numbers you should be fine because his motor and trans is raised 2" due to the Dropmember! Don't forget pic's!

XXL is your driveline a one piece or 2 piece drive line? im running a 2 piece drive line and it works fine! i had a one piece and i was blowin u joints left to right. so a guy i know told me to run a 2 piece and i have now 2 years and havent had ne problems with it! hope this was helpful!

It's 1-piece. I replaced the u-joints about 5 years ago but haven't had any problems since. My reason for the xmember questions on this thread is that I'm swapping out my stock xmember to get clearance from that hump under the driveshaft that the stock one has... that's my low point on the truck. After that, the driveshaft banging the top of the (mod'd) stock xmember is next. So this should relieve both problems.

I think most V8 auto swb trucks came with a 2 piece (or at least mine did). Most of the 6cyl straight shift swb trucks I have seen have had 1 piece shafts.

well i dont know if you have it in yet but i just picked up my trans crossmember yesterday so i can get my eng and trans mounted this week i will let you know what mesurments i use on my stock hoop this is how it looks right now
