A/C terminal and starter wires, help? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

OK, to the point where we are working on wiring, and if I can figure just a couple things out, and we hit no other major snags, should be back on the road this weekend.

First: There is a junction on the firewall, I think I was told it is a terminal for the A/C power? Mine melted in the fire, so I'm planning to use the one from the 84, but they are slightly different...

Someone ejukate me as to what all that is...

Next: What's the best way to get that back wire off the solenoid? The wires on the starter side (its the one that branches into 3) comes off easily but the last one is behind it and I cannot see the nut... this is looking from the ground up obviously. Any trick to getting that wire off?

Easiest to just drop the starter to get a better look at the wires.

That junction block on your firewall has a thick red wire that runs from your starter solenoid, on the same terminal as the battery cable connects to through a fusible link. The other two wires run to the fuse block connector on the firewall, one goes through the ignition switch and becomes the ignition controlled fuses on the fuse block, while the other stays in the fuse block, and becomes the fuses that have power all the time, wether the truck is on or off.

If your truck has an additional wire running to the junction block, its possible it is from the alternator, which I've seen once before, but usually the alternator wire either runs directly down to the starter solenoid through it's own fusible link, and shares an eyelet connector with the wire to the junction block, or is spliced into the junction block wire without a fusible link.

Any other wires coming off the junction block are for other accessories that either the dealer installed, some aftermarket shop installed, or was added by your truck's previous owner (dad right?)

Hmmm... how hard is it to pull the starter out? I'll try and fish around more before I try and pull it, I ran out of light today.

He didn't add anything to that block. He did say that the link came undone and it caused the A/C quit working, which he fixed.

This stuff is so baffling

OK I have all but one of the wires off the starter... the one set of wires on the solenoid closest to the starter itself came right off, 9/16th nut. But the one other wire next to it, how does it come off?

Like I mentioned, easiest to just drop the whole starter. There are two bolts holding it up, which thread straight up into the block. Just watch your face when you drop it, those things are heavy, and would do a fair bit of damage if it nailed ya!

But what about putting it back in? Won't that be tough? Doesn't it have to line up just right?

If it has the OEM starter mount bolts the shank is knurled so to fit snugly into the starter and align it into the proper position.

Yep, its self aligning. Not particularly easy to hold up there though, so count on a sore arm when all it said and done

you got that right, as weak as i am, and changing about 10 starters within a month, i could do one in no time, if my arm could take the pain
