Am I the only DumbF^%$

After leaving my headlights on for the third time, draining the battery, I wonder how many others have done the same.......
I just went to half a dozen auto parts stores looking for an aftermarket buzzer system for the lights so I don't have to get a jumb again. They all told me they know there was something available, but didn't know from who.
Seems like I remember a buzzer that plugged into the fuse panel and was wired to the headlights.
I am wondering if anyone has done this. My truck is an 85 c10.
All new vehicles come with this so I guess I was not the only one, in the past, to do this. Unfortunately, I still am forgetting to turn off the lights.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

I wish I could say I have never done that...

I remember kits to do exactly what you are asking about being available in auto parts stores 8 or 10 years ago, but I never see them any more.

Have you checked JC Whitney? They always used to have that kind of stuff.

EDIT: Lok at JC Whitney part number ZX815380T. It might do the trick.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

It would be realtively simple to wire something up---- Get a standard relay and set it up to have the power from the headlight switch go through the relay to an alarm, next connect the relay's contact actuating coil to the dome light circuit, so that when you open the door the buzzer will make noise. If you can't find a buzzer in the salvage yard, look for an old car horn and tone it way down.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

I will look around the internet to see if i can find that kit. I will try JC Whitney first. If I don't find it, I will try what was suggested above.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

I bought a gadget at an RV place that disconnetcs the battery when it gets below a specified level...... My problem was getting out while I left my ham radio on, it would drain the battery fairly quick.... This thing has a reset button on it, and shuts off when the battery is down a bit, but still has enough juice for a start.... Just pop the hood, hit the reset & go.... It covers more than just the headlights. I don't remember the name & I'm not near the truck right now, but most of the big RV lots should have one.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

How about Item#: BK 7821637 at www.napaonline.com? I think that is the buzzer you are looking for, but it is hard to say since they give so little info. You could probably look at one in your local NAPA store easily enough.

There is one here, but it seems overpriced...

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

looks like the LMC buzzer is what I need. The american auto wire one is the same, just costs a little more. But when you are going to the parking lot after working midnight shift, your tired and want to go home and your frigging truck won't start, (and it's 15 degrees outside) whats 25 bucks?????.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

The one at NAPA looks like the same thing, and it is about $7. That leaves about $18 to spend on truck parts.

Try this tiny url to it:

There was a guy on this site that made/makes them. Do a search in the 67-72 section, should be able to come up with his info.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

This is a totally random and off-the-task-at-hand question, but what up with the 'tiny URL' business? I've seen them around a few other places as well.. Could someone explain whats the point?

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

It allows you to shorten a URL. Click on the tinyurl link, and then look at the address it takes you to on the NAPA website. It is pretty long.

Some sites have extremely long URLs. Sometimes a really long link (AKA URL) like that gets broken when you send it in an email or post it to a board like this one. If you convert the URL to a tinyurl at tinyurl.com, you won't have that problem. Tinyurl.com will forward your browser to the right place.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

Short answer to original question: No. I think it's my feeble subconscious brain telling me I needed a new battery anyway.

I see kits with the 3M name on them occasionally at Wal-Mart for 6 or 7 bucks, in the automotive electric section.

Here's a similar buzzer: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

And a some simple instructions: http://50chevy.freeservers.com/Remote_Entry.html#SIMPLE

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

Checked with Pickmup and he only recommends the ones he has for 67-72 trucks.Checked somemore and looks like chevy has one(ac Delco 999373). Went to get one today and they will have it in tomorrow. Looks like it is about $10. Haven't seen a picture of it so not sure what I am getting yet.
After tomorrow I will post if it is what's needed for 73-87 trucks.

Re: Am I the only DumbF^%$

picked up the ac delco alarm for headlights today. Looks like others that were suggested by board members. Cost $16.40. The chevy dealer was closer to me then the Napa store and they said these would work on the 81-87 trucks.

It has clips to go into either type of fuse box, old style or new style. Looks alot like the one Pickmup has for the 67-72's so I figure(after seeing both) that his would also work too..
