Window antenna wire - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi,

Does anyone of you know howto repair the antenna wire in the windscreen. the connector is broken of with the removal of the windshield (let somebody else do it for the first time and you'll end up with a broken wire).

Is the wire worth saving at all? Or do I have to install an aftermarket antenna?

You can buy a replacement lead that goes from the radio up to the window. Is that what you're talking about or is the wire in the window broken?

nop, the lead from the radio to the window is fine. It's the connector that's normally is attached to the windshield that is broken of. So I've got a loose connector and some wires coming from the windshield.

I think you're SOL.

I'm in the same situation because the PO put in a windshield with no antenna. And of course there's no good place for an external one.

So you're telling me that you are driving without any radio? I really like the sound of a V8 but driving without music is really boring after a while. I've done it for about a week on my company car but after just one drive home I tought I was going mad. I really need my music in my car.

But to get back to the subject, the lead in the windshield is still there and I think with some effort I could fix it. The only thing I want to now if it's worth the trouble? And if somebody has done it before and has some tips?

So a replacement windshield is without the antenna wire? I hope I don't brake the original with the reinstallation!!!!

What's wrong with the right front fender?

Is it broke off so bad, it can't be soldered back on? If so, you have three options.

1. Put on a external antenna.
2. Buy a new windsheild w/antenna built in.
3. Do without one.

I'll try to get it soldered back on. If that does not work I'll go for the right front fender. Somebody got any close-up pics to show me how they've installed their antenna to the fender? Just in case the soldering does not work.

you could mount a shorter version antenna in the bed of the truck also or underneath if your really worried about it showing.

Some rare trucks in the mid to late 70's had fender mount antennas that are really *****in. I had one and still have the parts (wrecked the truck).. it was FACTORY and it looked good. I thought I had some rare thing but you can by repros in like LMC or one of them catalogs.. for cheap too like $20

check it out. if you want more info let me know

oh and the base of the antenna is cast to the shape/curves of the fender and everything. Id check it out if I were you

You can also get those antennaes that mount to the mirror.

I've seen a couple trucks that had the stock or shortie antennas mounted behind the A pillar panel.

I just remembered another option, which is the one I'm probably going to take. They make a 'hidden' antenna that is used on alot of hot rods. And come to think of it, that's probably the same kind brandon is talking about. Guys actually put these antennas inside their mirrors. Here are some links to check out:

I have heard mixed results from these antennas. Some say they have great reception and some say they get FM fine but not AM. Just thought I'd give you another option.

thanks for the links. Just found something else i needed for my truck. I really wanted wireless doorcontacts but I could only find them at LMC and those are pretty expensive. RODtronics sells them at a better price.

How about one like this? I took mine off and installed one like this under my cowling. It is a complete wire from the radio to the antenna and a power wire for the FM booster. On mine the antinna was about 4" long and 2" tall and wide. It mounted with double sided tape. The one on this site is magnetic so you have a choice. Mine works great.

if you cant get the windshield mount fixed. Think about a powered interior antenna. It can be hidden out of sight, and good reception.

The one at fry's is smaller and cheaper then the on from restored classics and you can totally hide it. Theirs mounts to the glass.
