I just scored a mint bed for my 71 and need to change them out, the only thing is, I'm by myself. Can a cherry picker be used to lift a long bed of truck? I thought if I used long eye bolts through the middle stake pocket and support chains to both ends, I might be able to lift it off. Anybody else got ideas/suggestions? I don't have any methods of overhead lifting.

i just clamped a 4x4 accross the bed rails and lifted it up //a little trial and error as to where to place it for the proper balsnce and its easy to do

Yep, it'll work. Just build a brace out of wood or something to lift from. Mine is shown with a short bed, but have done both this way. Just adjust your braces for balancing the bed. You may have to remove a wheel to get the cherry picker in from the side though.

Another question concerning transporting the bed. I have about 2 miles to go from where it's at. Can a bed be put on a wooden flatbed trailer, right side up, sitting on quarter panels, without any damage? I would just lightly strap since it's all backroads.

Do you have any old tires laying around? Stack tires underneath the bed floor when transporting it to keep the bedsides off the trailer floor.

I plan to convert my truck from a wavy (and rusty) steel bed to a wood bed. What are anyone's thoughts on just taking the blamed thing apart and removing it from the truck in peices rather than trying to rig up some way of lifting the whole contraption at once?

That can be done. Some bolts may be akward to get at, but it can definitely be done and handled the way you are thinking.

taking it apart would be more work than ding the engine hoist thing. then you would have to try and re-assemble it on your truck. there is a LOT of bolts to break. something in the area of 50 or more 40 year old bolts.
I agree with the old tire thought. check with a tire shop or boneyard. they might let you use a set for a day.

Be Carefull About Turning The Bed Upside Down.the Small Dents And Creases That This Causes Really Show Up After You Have Painted It And Look In Your Door Mirror Every Day.that Flat Surface Realy Shows Imperfections.

a longhorn bed with no wood is just shy of 300 pounds complete with no tail gate.
Here's how I did it by myself... I kept all the adult beverages for my self.

I didn't type it out step by step, but the photos kinda speak for themselves... Skip all the jaz on the first page, the bed swap part is on the second page.

I did it this way twice, all by my lonesome. First of all my method requires an overhead beam, tree limb, rafter, anything that will support at least 500 lbs safely. Next you need four Grade 8, 3/8" diameter by 4 or 5 inch long bolts with washers and nuts. Next you will need two lengths of steel cable wire or chain long enough to go from the front stake pocket on one side to the rear stake pocket on the other side of the bed with about a foot to two feet of slack. You will need a com-a-long that will pull at least 500lbs also.

Take the end of one length of chain/cable and lower it into one of the front stake pockets. Run a bolt thru one side of the factory holes in the pocket and thru a chain link that is down in the stake pocket then out the other side of the stake pocket. Put a washer and nut on that bolt. now go to the opposite side of the truck at the rear stake pocket and do the same thing with the other end of that same length of chain. Put the nut/bolt/washer on it. Do this same process with the other length of chain so that it is attached just like the first one, only to the two opposite stake pockets in the front and back. The chains should now criss/cross each other in the center of the bed. The fun part is coming, relax. Now position your truck under the overhead support that we first discussed so that the center of the bed is directly under the support. Now depending on what you have chosen as the overhead support, take your com-a-long and hook one end to the overhead support and the other hook to the center of the two criss/crossing chains that are approxiamatly in the center of the bed. See where this is going? OK, now you will need a short ladder to stand on beside the bed and start to take the slack out of the com-a-long, (tighten it) As you tighten it up you may need to reposition the criss/ cross of the cables/chains a little towards the front or back of the truck until you find the position where you are lifting the bed straight up without hitting the cab. This is really easy to do all by yourself, and with a little practice/patience, you can lift that bed up as high as you want, without hitting the cab, and move/roll the truck out from under it. I always place some heavy cardboard or even thick blankets over the cab roof and between the bed and cab just to cushion any hits when I first start going up. The com-a-long is great because you can then lower the bed onto anything you want in a very controlled manner. Try it, you'll like it!!
Someday I tell you the story of how I lifted the cab, complete with front clip, hood, rediator support, doors, windows and windshield, seat and everything off the chassis of my C20 all by my self. That one will cost you some beers though.
