368 Cadillac swap for my '62 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been looking at several engines for my truck, and I finally found a 368 Cadillac big-block. It's got a TH-400 transmission and 4-barrel carburetor. The book says it doesn't make all that much power, but it was $250 for everything. I can't wait to open that hood and see big-block from wall to wall! And those Flowmaster 40s will sound ohhh so good. Fixing trucks is so much fun!!!!

i have a 500 cid cadillac engine in my 64,same basic engine.

A lot of people have told me to stay away from the 368, but I love me some big-blocks!! You know, Cadillac had that whole V-8-6-4 cylinder deactivation thing going back then...luckily mine is carbureted. I'll bet it'll sound good with some turn downs, though! I like small blocks a lot, but I would much rather be different in what I do.

thats a good chose for mpgs,but be aware that cad 368s-500s are all the same size and weight and by using a 472 or 500 would give you one hundred more horsepower and use much more gas.btw the 368 with the eldlebrock intake only weighs 50 pounds more than a small block chevy.

The reason I bought the 368 is that it was such a good deal. I think it will fit my bill for quite a while, anyway. Maybe later I can get at least a 425 or bigger.

You could probably buy a whole donor car for around that, if you look around. My first car was a 78 Fleetwood. It had rear disc brakes, a 425, TH400, tilt/tele, and power seats. Mine was free (thanks, Grandma!) but it was worth pretty much nothing on trade in. That's how I ended up with it.

I looked pretty hard for an old Cadillac junker so I could get the engine and transmission. I found a couple of DeVilles that had 472s and 500s in them, but the price was like $800 around here. I would rather have at least a 425, but I will start student-teaching in August, so hopefully I will have my own paycheck rolling in soon. At least with the 368 being the same physical size outside, practically all the swap work and motor mounts will be ready for that 500. The 368 will get me rolling for now. I really appreciate the comments and help.
