Fill TWO tanks from ONE neck...

i know there has been some questions about this.. today i had the chance to look at my buddies truck with his bed off (82 silverado)... he cut a hole in each tank, used aircraft wing sealer, (could also be welded) to mount a piece of tube (1.5") on each tank then ran a steel braided hose from tank to tank.. he can fill up from both tanks, runs off one gauge, and use one pump, though he choises to use two...

side note.. he plans on making a skid plate to mount from one side to the other where the hose is.. as the hose hangs BELOW the drive shaft..

OR (as i also discovered)

There is enough room between the frame and the bed to put a Y tube in each filler neck and run a hose from one side to the other.. you could fill from one side.. but would have to use switch and run sending unit/pump for each side..

I think i will go with choice two. its a tad easier and get the hose up higher.. as i like to play off road when i get a chance..

I agree that choice 2 is much better idea. But for as often as I use both tanks I'll stick with the filling up both at the same time using 2 diiferent pumps

i like the fact that the fuel can freely go tank to tank in choice 1. but dont like the hose location.. after i clean out the passenger side tank (filler neck is tied up because i dont have a filler door yet, didnt notice the cap had come off..went mudding... lord only knows now much muck is in there) i am going to to do choice 2, i usually dont use 2 tanks.. but that has to do with the fact i dont like to have to set the pump down and turn truck around. someone always thinks i am leaving and pulls up to the pump..would be even better if the Y on the driver side was a switch.. to select the tank..

besides.. my "new" bed doesnt have a fuel door, this would fix the problem...

Is there enough room to weld pipe from tank to tank? That would allow you to fill up both and do the same as the hose. There must not be enough room or Im sure your friend would have done it that way. I like the idea of filling both tanks from one side though.

EDIT:
Welding a pipe may not be a good way, because of flexing and what not.

But the tanks should be connected at the bottoms as stated in the next post.

Cool

That's odd...I've never had problems filling the dual tanks on my '86. I just pulled up, and stuck the nozzle in the driver's side, and then went around to the passenger side, and stuck that nozzle in.

Oh, that's right! I have a diesel! It was really nice to be able to pull into a truck stop and use the diesel pumps with nozzles on both sides!

On my '81, I have a spare tank in the bed, so both tanks fill from the driver's side.

I really don't think the filler tube across the top will work. The gasoline will want to take the path of least resistance, and so it will fill up the closest tank first, and then it will have to run almost vertically to try and fill the other tank. Since the first tank will be full, it will keep clicking the nozzle off long before you ever get much fuel in the second tank.

Liquids like to flow down, not across.

However, the bottom feed would work, because the fuel filling up in the first tank would run across to the other and equalize.

My dad had a '71 GMC that had the add on dealer tanks in the box and they filled from one filler neck. As the first one got full it ran across the frame and into the other tank. I've never seen another like it and neither has my dad. At least it's a possibility.

Hooter that is the good thing about the 2 tanks. You can pull into either side. But since my switch valve isnt working right now, I always use the driver side.

Sounds like a problem for the fuel valve king to figure out for you
