You could get power steering on the 68 and older 4wds.They,like the 2wds were ram assist.The steering box on it now is a 69 and up power steering box added by someone at one point.Probably when they added the np205 t-case in place of the Rockwell too.
The project is looking good.I remember back when I was back in that stage of the build...

Those cracks make me want to go examine the frame on my '68 a little closer. It has power steering as well.

Could be worse though, the next body style GM 4x4s had a bad habit of breaking the frame right behind the motor mounts.

Progress 7/16/2007

I started cleaning up the frame for priming and painting. Initially I thought about getting the frame sandblasted but decided I wasn't in a hurry and would just clean it myself. I wanted a rotisserie so I could turn the frame for cleaning and painting but didn't have the room to store one while it was not being used. So I decided to make one out of engine stands.

I already had one engine stand and bought a second one for less than $40 at Harbor Freight. Then with a couple pieces of angle iron I was in business.

I like that idea on the holding of the frame and being able to rotate it to do some work.....

I had the idea of looking for a truck through DRMO but I didnt find anything other then some 2 ton trucks. Was the navy selling or did you get it from another owner?

I had nearly the same idea for a rotisserie setup, how hard was it to turn? Those three legged engine stands aren't overly stable from my past experiences.

I bought the truck from an individual. I saw it in a Truck Trader magazine and pretty much bought it over the phone without seeing it in person. It was a six hour round trip to pick it up and I trailered it home. My wife got a good laugh when she saw it. She said " at least the tires are good". The next morning it had a flat!!!!

It is pretty hard to turn with just one person. I hooked my cherry picker up to one side of the frame and lifted it to where I wanted it. Then I put the locking pins in place on the motor stands. For safty reasons I leave the cherry picker attached to the frame (with tension) when it is in a tilted position. This is working out OK.

I paid $1500 for it. (owner was asking $2000)

The truck was running when I bought it but was very unsafe to drive. It had drums on the front and when you applied the brakes the right front locked up and wanted to put you in the ditch. I drove it around the block one time after I got it home and was happy to get it back in the driveway without getting myself hurt.

The engine ran good but smoked a little. I have decided to put a new crate engine in it.

The transmission and transfer case seem fine but leak, I'm sending them out to a transmission shop to be looked over and repaired as needed.

I am shopping for axles now and want to get the frame, drive train and brakes in good condition before starting on the sheet metal.

Finally some progress...

Between my full-time job and a part-time lawn business I've had to put the project on the back burner. Now that the lawn business is slowing down, hopefully I can get some truck work done.

Used this primer and paint.

Wow! Nothing quite like a fresh frame. How did you like the No more rust product? Was it easy to apply? Does it show brush strokes?

The primer went on great with no brush strokes showing (if you put it thick). The paint probably does not look as good a a quality spray job but for my project it turned out fine. The paint is thick and is more like a coating than just typical paint. It reminds me of that stuff that you can dip tools in and it coats the handles.
