Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

I took a mustang up grade kit 13" rotors & PBR calipers redrill rotors to 5 on 5 cut stock rotor off in brake lath it worked. Used the hub only longer wheel studs , cut caliper mount off spindel made a mount bracket welded it to spindel , Rear cut outer diamiter of axle so 13" rotor would fit make bracket to bolt on wear backing plate was about $1700. to do front and rear ,test drove sat brakes work good jv I work on stuff I dont type well.

What u think it will cost to machine down the factory rotor to make a spindle and cut out the hub hole on the rotor. I picked up a c5 rotor and caliper today and have my rotor ready to take to the machine shop. I don't know if anyone around here will do this though. I may have to ship them to you Shane if you want to do it. I am just going to do a mock up version right now on the factory spindle I have.

Scoti
Where can you get them 5 on 5 hubs? WIll they fit our spindle?

Thanks to all

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

You can count on approx. $100 per hour with a minimum of 2 hours ... some shops charge 4 hours min.

Not sure what you mean by "machine down the factory rotor to make a spindle & cut the hub hole on the rotor" ... do you have a sketch that I might look at?

Sounds like it might be all lathe work ... am I correct in this assumption?

Damn my typing skills suck, I mean turn down the rotor to make a hub. I think I can go and borrow a brake lathe and do most of it myself. Yes it will all be lathe work.

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

a brake lathe isn't going to be able to do some of it .... you need a lathe that will not only cut the FACE of the rotor, but one that will cut the O.D. as well.

let me know if i can help.

Correct, but I can do some myself it will save money. I can probably get the trade school to most of the rest for free.

It would be sweet if those would work @ $58 for the pair. They are 5 on 5.

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

I re-read my post about the shop rate and it reads like that's what I would charge you ... I didn't mean I would charge you that sort of price ... I meant that's what most job shop type machine shops charge for such work.

If i can help, let me know ... NO CHARGE Dude!

Well I didn't want to say anything but you I took it as that was your rate also:fast68: I didn't expect free either, it's good to know that you are a good enough guy to offer it and this is not just something for myself but it could help a lot of people out on here. I am glad ( or I think u feel the same way) you are a good enough person to help a brother out. If we could get something like this to work we could save some serious bucks on big brakes.
Thanks Shane

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

The Impala SS's had a 5x5 wheel bolt pattern. There's bound to be brake upgrades available for these, or possibly the cop car Impala's had bigger brakes? Just some ideas where you guys might be able to find off the shelf parts.

This is where I've been looking for the answer the whole time I've been searching. 13" brake upgrades are available.... it's just a question of whether they can be adapted to the trucks spindle.

I agree Shane, but it can be done with a regular brake lathe.
Here is a shot of an aftermarket aluminum hub and a brake rotor that's been cut down with a brake lathe.
A buddy did this mod on an S-10 and it came out really nice.
When doing the "cut down rotor" you need to remember that the hat or new rotor will kick your wheel out 1/4 inch or so.
It also may be difficult to find a regular rotor that will fit over your cut down rotor hub. It may be easier to use aftermarket hats.

I'm trying to find an article that gave us the idea for the "cut rotor hub"....as soon as I find it I'll post it. If I remember , it was short but fairly informative.

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

We may have a bolt on kit that uses c5 or c6 calipers and rotors in a few months if you guys are willing to spend around $1200 for a kit that all you have to do is modify your spindles so you can bolt the bracket for the caliper. This will involve cutting the origianl caliper mount off each spindle and bolting on a bracket, you will get a custom hub that is designed to fit a 72 down disc brake spindle with a 5 on 5 bolt pattern and the trac width will not change. You will also get hoses, calipers, rotors drilled for 5 on 5 and you can get up to a 14" rotor for a little more cash. You will also be able to buy pieces seperatly if you wish. This is a maybe and not for sure thing, I am not saying this is going to happen but it kinda falls into my hands or someone else if they want to pay for the first design. What do you guys think about the price? It will be a hell of a lot cheaper than baer of ssbc.

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

I just got off the phone with cpp and they are over a year out having a kit for our trucks and it will be priced at over $1000. To me that is a decent deal but what is it going to cost if you ever have to replace their parts? I am sure they will have a rotor like ssbc has that is 13" and made like a factory hub/rotor. I bet it will be expesive to replace that when it wears out. What will you do if the caliper screws up, you know that will be expensive also. The thing with the c5 setup is rotors are cheap, you can get a set drilled for 5 on 5 for around $120 for the 12.80" version. You can go to the gm dealer and get calipers and pads or any auto parts store for that matter. Where are you going to get parts for the cpp setup besides cpp?

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

No matter what our spindels have to have some machine work and calipers need to be moved, right? So it seems like it will be a costly conversion for anyone. Most kits will have to either include new spindels or mod yours. Wish i had my old spindels to play around with, i'm sure it could be done with some effort... If there wasnt so much liability in brake parts it might be worth looking into desiging and selling a kit and use stock gm parts...

Will there be a version for 73 and up?

Hope fully all you will have is the cutting of the caliper mounts. You could do that with a porta-band, or a sawzal maybe, we will have to see. The good side is you will use your spindles.

Re: Who makes bigger front discs?

[Public Service Announcement]
Beware of cutting down the truck rotors to create hubs.

Not all truck rotors are created equal. Cutting one brand down may not pose any problems; yet cutting another (of lesser quality) could lead to serious failure.

To say they can all be cut down w/o issue is possibly putting others @ risk.

Sorry no pic yet I sawzed the mount off my drop spindle used the dust cover mount holes for caliper bracke mount then welded them in place used PBR 2 piston caliper. I cut the stock rotor off at orlies parts store on there brake lath did not machine the face down got 1/4 longer wheel studs The mustang 13" brake up grade rotor will fit over a 6" hub That was the bigest rotor inside diamer I could find then drill to 5on5 lug it takes a big diameter hub for 5on5 lug .I will try to post pic . Like i said less than $2000. i done front and rear 13" rotors pbr calipers black poder coated with what ever name silk screen on the caliper .
