Newest Family Member!

Well it took me a couple years, but I finally have another truck. been driving a 2003 Malibu and really needed another truck. My previous truck was a 69 GMC long bed. I went tonight to pick this truck up. A 1983 Chev pickup. Paid all of 650$. It needs some work, but I hope nothing major.

Here she is being loaded up.

and here she is at home.

One thing I know for sure is that I need to change the rear brake lines, as when it was being secured on the truck, we noticed one side started to leak. He may have nudged the line and looking at them, it looks like they are ready to be changed.

How in the heck does everyone keep finding these killer deals? I'm looking all the time and all I find is over priced junk.

Sweet deal on a solid truck bro....

Thumbs up Re: Newest Family Member!

Welcome to the 73-87 board you did very well

What are your plane for her besides the basic clean & tune up stuff?

Ken.....He's in Canada so if that $650 is Ca. then it's a little more in USD but still a killer deal on a good looking truck.

That's at least a $2k truck around here unless it's packed full of bondo that I can't see. Nice score!

Re: Newest Family Member!

Well I plan to change the rear brake lines, front flex lines, possibly change the box, due to the fact that 2 of the supports are rotting away and the drivers side support for the tailgate is also rotting away. But there is a place around here that has a **** load of boxes all the time.

Once I give it a good cleaning and see how solid it really is, I may drop in a 350, since it is a 305 right now, possibly a mild drop.

My biggest problem right now is that it starts up real easy but will not stay running. I figure it's carb related. ( I'm gonna make a post about it)

Oh yeah and the gas gauge doesn't work.

I'm just hopping it doesn't cost me a fortune to get it back on the road.

I know the US dollar has been collapsing against the CA Loonie (dollar), but its still like $1.15 US vs to $1.00 CA.
Just a few years ago it was like $1.55 US vs $1.00 CA.
In other words it would be less in US dollars. But not by much now

Re: Newest Family Member!

Just went and priced out a rebuild carb and they want almost 600$. They are nuts. I was going to replace it with what was there, a 4BBL Rochester quadrajet, but at those prices, I might just look for a good used one for now.

I'm also debating buying a rebuild kit and do it myself. I know I can do it, but not sure if I really want to, lol.

Re: Newest Family Member!

Pretty much the same price, hehe.

I am going to take a drive to the end of my road and go check the wrecking yard there. Anything older you are looking for is usually there, since alot of yards no longer what the older cars. But this guys takes them.

Re: Newest Family Member!

SCORE

I went to the junkyard, went through the entire yard and found nothing worthwhile. Then in the front yard was a chevy "shaggin wagon" van, I mean red velvet interior etc...

Anyhow, it also had a 305 in it with a BRAND NEW Quadrajet rebuilt carb on it. This thing was spotless inside. Got it for 50$.

He also had a 350 running engine, but had a lifter knock, for 200$. These 350s are getting really hard to find these days up here. He just sold a good running one the other day for 650$. He can't keep them, the day he gets one, it sells.

Re: Newest Family Member!

quick little update.

I got the truck home tonight after getting it certified and plated. All together with buying the truck, and with the parts I put on and what was needed to get it certified, I spent about 1200$ total, on the road, driving.

Now I did discover though that my rad leaks and I will need to replace it. Also, this truck rides like my old 4x4, I forgot how rough a truck was and you feel EVERY little crack in the road.

Re: Newest Family Member!

I drove it to work this morning, leaky rad and all. It is way harder on gas than I think it should be, but that could be a carb issue that goes along with the hesitation.

The hard ride, could be cause it seems to sit pretty high for a regular 2wd truck. The guy I bought it from at work said it has a towing package on it.
