8 Lug options ?????

Looking for whats available in factory 8-lug wheels and sizes. The 67 3/4 4x4 resto is coming along very nicely. The body is in paint and being assembled ,the drivetrain is done (just found the last NOS parts for the T221). And the engine just came off our dyno. So I need to start thinking about final touches.

Options so far : MUST be 16" (not 16.5)

1- Alcoa new style polished alum. (on most 2500 gm's) and always for sale on e-bay but expensive (was my original choice)

2- Chrome new style (2002-2003) spoked factory GM (dont like em' much)

3- 1999(?)- up gray steel with plain black center (believe it or not I think these look very "No nonsense" and are now my first choice but I cant believe I cant find them cheap. Also who knows the width?

4- 1993(?)-up gray steel with chrome center and trim ring (suburban style) someone had a photo on a green gmc looked nice.

5- Factory 70-72 steel with white center cap(?) supposedly hard to get. Also not sure of sizes as one was supposedly 10" wide (no thanks on the 10")

what am I missing and who has any photos????

thanks guys for any opinions. sure wish I could see them first on the truck via a photo program.....

Thanks for the photo Gee Emm. Those are the 70-72 (right?) I referred to as #5. I assume the front hub cap will have to be modified for the 4WD locking hub access? Would look good since the truck is Arctic White.

I just purchased a set of '02 chevy 8lug wheels for my '72 C20.I paid $395.00+$75.00 shipping. That included the four wheels(aluminum, new take offs),chevy centers and the correct lugnuts that will fit my 9/16" threads and hold the center caps.If you are using wheels that came on a truck with metric lugs you will have to get these special lugnuts in order to hold the wheel correctly and retain the factory center cap.I haven't seen these lugnuts for less than $2.00 each, times 32 that's a good piece of change. With all that said,I figure that I have a little over $100.00 on each wheel, not bad for a nice looking aluminum rim, when the cheapest steel wheel from the aftermarket will be around $35.00-$45.00.If I'm not mistaken all these newer factory wheels are 61/2" wide.I know that mine are as well as the steel ones(rally and chrome) that I considered before buying the aluminum ones. Before I actually bought them I borrow one from a friend's truck and checked the fitment on my '72,they fit perfect, clearing all suspension and brake hardware.Good luck hunting.HF

My problem is I want the hot rod look. Seriously Ralley Wheels with corvette spinners (slobber slobber). Since I'm lowering the truck anyway I've decided a long time ago to convert to 5 lug and save up for a custom rear dana with disk brakes. In fact I already have the HO72 w/ 3.90 and Detroit Locker reserved for jostrans68....

This is the wheel that hecticblasts is talking about. My brother also got a set off Ebay for about what he paid a couple of weeks ago. They are commonly referred to as PYOs, that is the GM RPO code. This is the only aluminum wheel used on '99 and up GM 8 lug trucks.

You do have to cut the centers out of the center caps that you put on the front, since the IFS trucks do not have lock outs. I have seen this done, and it looks pretty good. Personally, I would use these or the Alcoas.

I am curious to see some pics of your new truck Durney. When you get an idea in your head, you don't screw around.

Now after re-reading your original post, I see that you already considered the PYOs. I also bought a set recently with center caps for about $350, so they are out there for under $100 apiece if you look around. You have to be creative how you search for them on Ebay, and you will find some going for less than $400.

I have a whole set of chrome Amercian Racing 8 lug wheels, caps and nuts(9/16) that will fit your truck. They are new. I'd take 600.00 dollars for all of them (plus shipping). Heres a fare pic of it .This one is polished ,but mine are chrome. Price them and you'll see that its a deal.

16" x7'' split rims painted white with no center caps came stock on my 72 K20 4WD. I swaped them for 1 piece steel wheels from a later model. I don't care for the splits but if you want them they are sitting in my garage collecting saw dust.

I thought these looked pretty cool.. They are Dodge Ralleys with bowtie hubcaps. You could loose the hubcaps and go to a later model 4x4 center cap or even a nice aftermarket one. Hmmmm, now you have me thinking...LOL

Outstanding gentlemen...thanks for the info. It seems I am leaning toward two choices ;

1- the new style generic gray wheel with the all black centers (which I will have my friend powder cote the wheel either gunmetal gray or the white like the truck). Will look VERY heavy duty and business like. There is NO chrome or trim on the truck remember. (other than the bumper and interior)

2- The Alcoas , VERY handsome and will add a custom look albeit more expensive. Really wish someone had a photo on an early 67-68 4x4....

Gee-Emm - I wasnt sure what years those were from. Also I'd like to know the wheel size. Sharp truck by the way.

bgbchevy - Thanks those are what I called the "suburban" wheels . Also a nice look but unsure of the size?

hecticblasts - that seems to be a good deal can you tell me where they came from? I klnew about the sizes of those (actually made by Alcoa) and the lug deal. But I would like to test fit one first because of the 4wd and LARGE ho drums etc. Are you sure about the rest of the wheels being 6.5" like the Alcoas? If so you just saved me some time thanks. Would REALLy like to see a set of these on a 67-72........anyone?

Blazer1970 - I'll see about photos when its done. And yes those are the wheels what are your "creative" searches (tried 8-lug but get a lot of "homey" style stuff.

Thanks tennman but the I am trying to stay all GM....

They are 16's, but like hecticblasts said, the lug nuts have to be changed out. I'm not exactly sure of the size because they were on my truck before I bought it.

I can tell you that those rims will definitely fit over your drums. The only sticking point is the center caps as I noted above. Also, all of the newer GM (non dually) 8 lug wheels are 6 1/2 inchers. The early PYOs were made by Alcoa (the set I have on my '01 2500HD are Alcoa), but the newer set that my Brother just bought ('02 take-offs) were made in Hungary IIRC. Look exactly the same, but definitely not made by Alcoa.

These are the ones you want $390.

Durney:You will have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to these darn computers,I don't know how to put a link in this thread or a picture for that matter.I got the wheels out of Ebay from brandontownley@hotmail.com,that's his e-mail and user name.I was doing searches under chevy truck wheels, chevrolet truck wheels and chevy gmc wheels in the parts, car and truck section. He has right now a set of the aluminum wheels for the GMC,same wheel but GMC centers,he sells these a little cheaper,I guess the demand is stronger for the chevy.Like Blazer1970 said,a modification to the centers on the front wheels may be in order to clear your hubs, that will be an easy task on a lathe and I bet it will look real trick, kind of like the original hubcaps for these trucks in the late 60's and early 70's.I've been looking for these wheels for quite some time and was always outbid,I just figured that I wasn't going to pay over $400.00 for them,I used the buy it now option for $395.00,they were offered with a $350.00 first bid so I went for it.After reviewing the thread I saw where the e-mail address I gave for the man is set up already as a link, how'bout that, check him out.HF

Hectic - Emailed townley about the wheels thanks.

Blazer 1970- thanks for the links (although the one is a little higher than the rest at 575 and when I called they said "sure we'll sell outside of ebay....they are 625! ) uhhhh ...ok.

The guy for the 390 price i called and a secretary said they will call back....when they decide on a price on one of the other 3 sets they have.....

Bill72 - Very clean setup! and I think thats the tire size I will be using (265/75/16) if they fit nicely on the 6.5" rim.

As far as machining them well one of the guys that works for me (who REALLY wants me to use the aluminums) drew up a split cap idea at lunch that would attach via internal hex so that you would just turn the outer portion of the center cap to lock the hubs.... I think he's looking for overtime..... i 'll most likely just cut the center out if I go that way.....

I don't have my digital this week but I have been running a new take off set of 02 alloys on my 72 C20. You have to either change out the lugs to metric or to special double threaded 9/16 lugnuts as stated and then the next problem is with the rear end hub center. The wheels inset and the new cap will not clear the hub center by about an inch! I ordered alluminum wheel spacers to bring the wheel out(plenty of stud ) and ground some of the cast hub and the back of the plastic cap center to get the chrome caps to fit. The plastic nuts still barely grabbed to hold the cap on. I think the best fix would be to put two 1/4 inch alluminum spacers and make sure there is full lug holding the nuts. I also tried using the old factory lugs first to hold the wheel on and then the new double threaded nut to hold cap on. This works but still has about 1/2" gap cap to wheel.
They do look awesome with the RWL tires!

A HA! I knew there would be another hurdle.

So let me get this straight. You can use the factory lugs to hold the wheel on then just double nut to attach the cap (and account for the 1/2" between the cap and wheel ....OR use a 1/2" spacer (or is it a 1/4" ?) to move everything out then use the "conversion" lugs instead of double lugging ?

thanks for the info!

Someone must have a 67/72 4wd photo with these on it ....

Thats right Durney.

The spacer disks are only 1/4 inch thick and I bought a set off eBay for like $14 a pair. Just really not a clean easy way to do this as I stated but they do look nice. The double nut situation is really ok too but I just don't like that space between the cap and wheel as you can see the original nut and the new double threaded nut on top.

You can easily spend another $100 on the special lug nuts and wheel spacers so I have $1000 in wheels and tires on the old

Thanks to Hectic for the info on Brandon Townlee. It looks like the decision has been made. I popped a wheel off a customers 2002 truck while he was at the shop and we put it on the 67 to check for spacing, clearance, offset...and most importantly LOOKS!

They look better than I thought (lots of ohhh and ahhhs from the peanut gallery) and fit well.

A couple of things though. The studs are JUST enough for full engagement so I'll be bolting them directly and cutting the front caps. The rears are a different story and I may fab a set of cap spacers.

I DEFINITELY need some info on where to get the 9/16 ID lugs with the external threads for the caps.....anybody know who makes these? NAPA wants 3.75 each ...ouch. I thought I saw somewhere here on the board selling for 1.75 each???

The caps I got are GMC's so I will be looking for replacement stickers for the rears (fronts wont matter) or maybe i'll simply paint them black and put a bowtie on it ???

Thanks to you all for the input so far....Merry Christmas!
