Is it possible to push start a powerglide? Just curious. I put in a new starter. It will start sometimes but others it grinds. Cant seem to get it to engage properly. So far my best luck is with no shims.

If I take it out for a drive right now I want to know I can get back home with a push start in worst possible scenario.

I've heard of automatics being push started but you have to be going 40mph or so before it will work. I've never tried it though. Personally I don't think I would shut it off if I went out for a drive in this situation.

Pulling or pushing an automatic is not adviseable. I believe the grinding is a result of a maligned starter or incorrect flywheel/starter gear. I would verify both and avoid pull/push starting your Powerglide.

Thanks guys. I found the culprit. It was a stripped starter bolt. It was threading only onto the starter but not the block. After a buddy turned the key I can see the starter tweaking too much and getting jammed thus just making a clicking sound. Or at times it would just turn the engine about 1/2 turn and stop.

So after dropping the starter for the millionth time I finally noticed the bad threading. Bought a new bolt and has now started about 10 times in a row with no issues.

just so you know i have push started a glide. i dont think its too good for it but yes it will work. only auto tranny ive seen that will. at least easily.

I used to push start my 64 Impala all the time.....Actually, I would drive to about 40, then shut it off, turn the ignition back on, and drop it in drive...fired right up. Really trip out my buddys.

The reason this happens, is that the powerglides have a rear pump as well (spun by the output shaft)....so there is always tranny fluid pressure......no harm would be done to the tranny....In fact, they could towed without disconnecting the driveline, due to the fact that the tranny is being lubed.

As far as tranny damage....you would get the same wear as you would when you manually downshift the tranny into low-range.....We always did that to sound off the 12" glasspacks !!!!
