Look what I found

Took my first trip to the junkyard and almost immediately found this lying on the floor of a truck. Got it for $50 with a bunch of other stuff thrown in.

How hard is it to find these?

I searched every truck in the yard and couldnt find one with a tach

Re: Look what I found

You scored a home run on that. I have only seen one actually installed in a truck. See them on Ebay in the $100-300 range on a freqent basis.

It doesnt work , I left it there and I would hate to see you lose $50 so i will gladly send you the $50 and you can send me the tach dash .

Home run Hell! He scored a Grand Slam!!!

You just don't find them things that easy anymore that one looks to be in very good condition except for the plastic film thats missing under the tach.

Did you get the tach wiring harness too?

Nice score. Looks like it is in great shape too.

I have the same one in my truck, but the tach is off alittle.

Re: Look what I found

Thats all thats on the back of it

Now im not sure if i should sell it and use the money for my cars or keep it and put it in a truck someday.

The guy at the junkyard said it was for a 1982 or earlier truck so it wouldnt fit on mine.

Re: Look what I found

I also found a 1975? Chevy Custom 10 with a 8ft stepside bed 4spd.

There was a lot of great stuff in that yard but unfortunately they are WI cars and you can really see that.

I'll let the experts step in on this one, but the unleaded fuel, and font indicate it's later style. It is def not for early yaer trucks.

Here's the correct one in my 77.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that you have a '76 cluster. The '77 would have dual warning lights at the bottom of both the speedo and tach.

1984Silverado4x4, the cluster you've got (nice score, btw!) is from an '80 or newer. I'm not sure if anyone really knows, but I've read they're believed to have been dropped from the options list after '81, so it would be from either an '80 or '81 model truck. The unleaded fuel gauge would indicate a half ton or light duty 3/4. Even though your truck is an '84, with a little creativity you can make the tach cluster work in it. I just put one in my '89 Burb.

Re: Look what I found

given it has the unleaded gas like mentioned and the od indicater easily an 82+. i've only ever seen one and that was in my 82, first truck i ever owned and that was like 15 years ago. alot rarer and worth more the earlier years, ive had 4 or five of them.

Actually it's a hybrid. I didn't like that the 77 cluster had 2 windows on one gauge and one on the other. I had this one built from pieces, but for the most part it's a 77.

Was it 76 or 75 that had the amp gauge?

Re: Look what I found

The boneyard find is 1980 up. real good score if it works or not, but since it has the pigtail wires just hook it up and see if it works then check against a REAL tach because those things commonly worked, but were way off as the electronic pieces aged. if it's just off by 100-300 from a good, high dollar tach that's normal. crossy

Re: Look what I found

See the shift indicator with a overdrive position ? 82+ for sure.

You scored big time on that. Weird that someone left that there but it looks like it's in nice shape. I would go back to that same truck and see if you can score the tachometer wiring as well, since it's also an important part of the swap.

All of the factory tachs I've ever seen were marked on the back as to which terminal was for what. Look closely and I'll bet yours is too. One goes to the tach terminal on your distributor, one goes to a 12 volt source (a source that is on when you turn your ignition switch forward so that there won't be power going to the tach when the engine isn't running), and a ground. The original factory harness would be nice to have, but isn't a required part of a swap. The tach harness is independant of the harness for the rest of the gauges and is easily fabricated with a little bit of wire and some terminals.

I'm pretty sure that '75 was the last year for the amp gauge.

Your gonna have to give me some ideas. The only one I can think of is the radio and im not sure if or how you could hook it up to that.

It was on the floor of a truck that still had the gage cluster in it so I dont think ill be able to find the harness for it.

That'd be where the main instrument harness plugs into the cluster.
