New here. Kinda long

Hey guys, first off, great forum ya get here. Looking foreward to hangin with yall. Got the disease in high school with a 63 chevy short bed. Went to ala. to get it, brought it back home in Fl. Got it running, drove it all through high school, graduated, got a better job, started racing it. Blew it up. My pops sold it to our buddy. Over the course of about 2 years hes got it looking sharp. (will try to upload pics later, computer has resorted to anarchy). Anyhow, he would sell it to me for $5500, no engine, no tranny. I didnt have it. Was telling the guys at work about it and one of our road mechanics told me he had one similar to it. Found out it was a 64 gmc. Asked about him selling it. He said "if you get it this weekend you can have it, i want it out of my yard." Needless to say, i got it. Its completely disassembled now, otherwise id show a pic, guess i still could reguardless. Like i said, will try later.

I do have a question though. Do yall know of any links or pics i can look at to see how to chop it? looking to go about 3". Still undecided. Any help would be greatly appreciated.,

Welcome aboard...great story, until I read the part about chopping it. Cool today, but maybe not in a few years. I hope you keep the factory body lines. In any case, good luck with your project and post pictures early and often.

Welcome from BC! Everybody's got an opinion, but I'm with Tony on the top choppin. To me, chopped trucks (especially long boxes) look like they've had an encounter with a crusher. I guess if you're going to have it drag on the ground, then the chopped top might be in character. But, that's not my liking. As soon as lowering moves the center of the wheel above the center of the fender opening, it has gone too far.

Besides, I like my headroom!

welcome from texas!!! ya know i personally dont like the chopped look, or the lowered look. i go more for a lift kit and knobby tires!! then again im a country boy so that might have something to do with it... lol hey, i just got an idea!! everybody lowers there trucks and chops there roof but ive never seen anybody put a lift kit AND lift there roof. you know the opposite of a chop? lol

Well, like i said, am still unsure if i want to try to do the chop. Didnt think about how it will look 5-10 yrs down the road. Guess its easier to leave her alone for now. Thanks for the input, perhaps it will keep me from messing up a good thing.. I think the pics of my old 63 are here. Still learnin the board ya know.

Heres a pic of the 64 gmc. Not to rub it in but the only rot on this truck is about the size of a mans hand in each floor pan, everything else is good. And all it cost me was fuel to go fetch it. Sorry bout the pic quality, was taken by camera phone.

Hey, I'll give a shout out to choppin'

I have a 1960 with 3" chopped. I didn't do it, so I couldn't tell ya how to chop, but I think the chopped look goes well as long as its lowered.

That is a fine looking rig...I hope you keep it factory. It will stand out more since it is not chopped or lowered, more so than if it was like everyone else's truck. The craze right now is to see how low you can go, but that will fade with time, like everything else.

How true....But don't you think this looks better and no one can say this will fade...because it has been the look for 40 plus years on these trucks... Just ad a set of wheels lower and voila... notice it still has retained the 6-lug wheels...

I have a little bit of lilred66 and 502trippower in me. I like to keep as original as possible on the body but i have got to lower one also. I think about all older trucks look good with some lower stance (that is if they are 2 wheel drive). However some look great at stock also, but i always seem to get the terd looking ones so i lower to make the terd look better.

I agree on the how low can you go trend. Guys have been lowering automobiles since about the day after they were invented. But it was to improve handling or make the look more the the racer of the day. Laying rocker does not scream high performance to me and will probably pass by as a trend. Lowering, on the other hand, is here to stay.

I would do what YOU think is right....either way everyone here will help you out.

My opinion would be to leave the roof stock.

couldnt find the "beating the dead horse" pic... but i dont think lowering will fade. I dont consider it a trend.

Anyway, I agree with chief that if YOU think it looks good then go for it. As long as you dont add a a wood spoiler and ground effects.


And I also want to add that you handled peoples opinions very well. Sometimes people get offended. With that being said.. I vote to leave it unchopped.

The key to the customs is doing it RIGHT! To each his own on what looks good or great....but if it is done half a---d it never looks good. If you decide to chop, take your time and get help or advice from those who have done it before. There have been some trucks on here before hacked and chopped that in all honesty were done wrong and look terrible. The owner may think it looks good, but sorry they don't. Funny part is from a distance pic they look good, then they threw in the close-up and ooooh.........Take your time, do it right! Jerry
