sm 465 tranny

hey guys, probably gonna buy this 4 speed tranny off a local guy. what does it mean to have pto (rear output) don't mean to sound stupid but only dumb question is one not asked. thx

Pto (power Take Off) It Is Used In Trucks To Drive Ceartain Accesories. (hydraulic Pump, Winch, Dump Bed)

....And the SM465 has two PTOs (both sides of the case). I have a 465 in my 77. Great transmission, although the granny low is only rarely useful (*). I usually start in 2nd.

Watch the bellhousing... it's different from the standard GM one in that the indexing ring is larger on the tranny than the standard bell hole. Need a cast iron bellhousing to match.

* When I'm pulling a heavy load, having the granny low is great to get things moving without leaving my clutch as dust on the road.

Ya, $100 bucks would be a good deal for a usable unit. I guess because they're heavy (180 lbs) and aren't useful to the pony car crowd, they don't seem to ever command a high price. Novak offers fully rebuilt ones for $1000, which would be a steal for a 5 speed with O/D. Heck a Muncie 4 speed (M20/21/22) would be worth many times more than a 465, but they aren't half as tough.

What rear gears do you have, truckin?

I'm not sure greg it's a stock rear end, the one thing I need is the low granny gear because I pull my pontoon boat up my very steep and long drive way.

Oh, well you'll like the 465 then. About the only thing in this class that can beat it for low end is the SM420. Everything more modern for the <1T trucks doesn't have as good a crawl ratio.

I prefer the SM420 over the 465. It's smaller, lighter and shifts faster and easier. But use what you can get, they're both next to indestructable.

I'm also not an expert on the rear pto. If not needed, I would remove it if possible, and sell it. Seems to be a good market for pto's. And you will have one less place for drips.
