Progress on '66 Chevy K10 lwb fleetside truck

I wish we could the amount of work we have done on the truck in the amount of time it takes to shoot the photos...we would have been done a year and a half ago. We feel like it is very important to have good photo documentation of the build, so we have tried to stay true to that commitment. I hope they are enjoyable to everyone that takes the time to view them.

Lookin at the wood in your bed, reminded of a trick that an ol man told me.

He painted the wood the same color of his truck. After it dried, he sanded the paint off, and clear coated it with some type of clear stain.

The grain retained the color of his truck.

Thanks for sharing the idea...we may have to give it a try on the next one. I'm pretty conservative, so we went with red oak with clear-coat, even though the factory fit and finish was southern yellow pine with a mix of flat black paint and kreosote-type material and the wear strips were painted black from the factory.

Thanks for the "attaboy". I appreciate you following the build thread.

We have two major milestones left...2-1/2" dual exhaust with Flow Master Series 40 mufflers existing out the back running along the framerails and installing the windshield. We use a company called Binswanger in Shawnee, KS to do our windshield install. We provide the truck and the windshield grommet and they provide the windshield, labor and guarantee for under $200.00, all in, including tax.

We will keep everyone posted of our continued progress.

We learned a little trick that makes installing the flat washers, lock washers and nuts on the bolts in the wear strips on the underside of the bed. Due to the width and depth of the bed cross sills, it is difficult to insert the stack on the bolt and get it started, not to mention all the obstructions in the way and the fact that you are laying on your back.

We used a product called 3M Flexible Strip Caulk from Eastwood. I cut a very small piece, about the size of a BB and placed it on the face of the flat washer. Then do the same with the lock washer and nut. This stuff is very sticky and will hold the stack together to allow you to manuever it into position and get it started, without the frustration of dropping pieces and struggling. One of the uses for this product is to seal the backside of trim clips when using speed nuts, so we thought this would be good for this application, as well, not to mention it also acts as a thread locker, to keep the nuts from backing off due to vibration while driving.

It is almost mandatory to have a partner on the topside inserting and holding the carriage bolts in place in the bed strips, while you start the stack from below. In any case, I have seen a thread or two in the past about this process and wanted to share our experience with others doing the same project and experiencing the same frustrations. After we got rolling, it took us about an hour to start all the fasteners.

Initially, only finger-tighten the fasteners, to ensure the space is correct and consistent across the width of the box and the reveal of the wear strips is uniform over the length of the bed. This includes the eight offset washer bed to frame bolts, as well as the cross sill to frame bolts. We also used the 1/4" square rubber spacers between the frame rail and the cross sill landing pad. Although it takes some time to go back and tighten the nuts, it is time well spent so you do not discover you have a mismatched reveal from one side to the other, that needs to have them all loosened to make the adjustment.

The owner purchased the red oad bed wood kit from Classic Parts in Riverside, MO for around $300.00. I had the finish applied by Olympic Cabinet Company in Kansas City, KS. We used a product called Euro/Euro X, manufactured by Compi-Distributors at 800-333-4891. This product is specifically suited for exterior exposure. I found this website with the product information: http://www.mlcampbell.com/pages/starpage.asp?star=EUX Even with an open-grain hardwood like oak, this product leaves the surface glass smooth with no visible surface waviness or divots in the open grain cells.

We will also post a final thread, giving all the specifics of the build, including the paint colors, wood finish products and the suppliers, sandblaster, powder coater, paint/bodyman, upholsterer, glass installer and exhaust shop, that participated in the build. We need to tweek the front sheet metal and hood, as well as install the windshield and back glass, exhaust system and do a comprenhensive punch list. We are anxious to get it done and on the road again.

Here are a few updated photos of the '66 Chevy K10. The windshield and back glass have been installed, as well as the dual 2-1/2" Series 44 Flowmaster exhaust with 3" polished stainless steel tips.

The final wet sand/polishing and the side molding will be completed next week. We have some tweeking to do on the brakes, and some of the gauges to get them operating properly and the project will be complete.

When it is complete, we plan to do a full photos shoot of it all dolled up. We will post pictures of the final results.

The steering wheel was painted the same color as the interior, which was color-matched to the original medium fawn, by the local auto paint supplier.

We finally pulled the '66 Chevy K10 out of my shop on Saturday, May 17th. We still have a few things to trouble-shoot, in order for everything to be working properly, but for the most part, things turned out very nice. The owner was able to pick up his son from school before the end of the school year, which was a goal we set back in December. Here are a few photos of the truck the day she drove out of the shop.

Tony, Thanks for the quick reply. I had not heard anything in a while on the truck and was wondering what happenend. Thank god it wasn't stolen or wrecked like member SeanPaintsFlames right after he had it painted. I'm looking forward to more photos and the details of the build.

truck when to a show last weekend and I plan on going to more I did not place in top 15 but it was unfair in my opinion. They did not have a car class and a truck class so it went up against all the older cards. The judge was obviously all for the cars.
