Talking Dont kill me for asking!!

Hi all!! Im into demolition derbys and have done it for 17 years now and have always only ran cars. This year my favorite track is running trucks and I thought that sounded like a new challenge. Now I love the 60s and have owned 2 suburbans and restoring my 3rd pickup now. How well do you think a 60s pickup would hold up? Im not sure what the best truck to use is?? I was told the fords in the 60s were good but have never seen one up close. I can use any 2wd pickup or suburban. Of course i would never destroy something that could be restored. Any ideas anyone?

we do truck derbys here and the 73-87 trucks always do well. although I have seen some 60-66 chevys do ok to. I would use one with a steel bed floor.

Do the 60s fords have a wood bed also? Also dont worry I would never use a ford motor I have a 70s 350 that I have used for the last 15 years that never lets me down. Its amazing how awesome chevy motors are it has lots of miles on it and runs with no radiator for at least 10 min. It never dies no matter how hard i hit. Do the internationals have a steel bed?

I used a ford once...........with a chevy 350 in it but the fords seem to lose the steering pretty quick.

I now am running a 1979 1 ton 2wd chevy that used to be a Schwanns delivery cube truck. We shortened the frame and put a pickup box on it. I have run the same truck now 6 times and have 3 firsts, 2 seconds and a third place finish. Its just barely starting to flip the front left frame horn up a bit. We run in a open class (no rules) similiar to a modified demolition derby. Its all about trying to find a rust free truck. I have learned over the last 16 years that having a good motor and tranny and a good set of gears will get you good results. We have 3-4 motors that we rebuild ever winter for the upcoming derby seasons. If you build the truck right, they last a long time compared to alot of the Chevy Wagons and impalas I used to run.

Hard hitting derbies in trucks.....they don't give.....just your body does

i had a '64 ford and a '67 international, both had metal bed floors

I assume that is after you relocate the gas tanks

I would use a 70's Ford or Chevy, not the classics. Besides, all the rust on a 60-66 would make it just fall apart.

60-66 Chevy's are light too, and they're that way for a reason. Next time you have a fender off or are replacing bed braces, notice how flimsy they are. That might be something to consider when taking hard hits.

I'm not sure the rules that you have to follow, but if it were me, I'd find a 70's 1 ton flatbed and put a junk-yard box on it.

I believe the flatbed will already have the fuel tank between the rails, and the frame on the 1 ton should be super stout!

Some of you guys have seen this before. This is my '64 F100. Heavy, straight-axle, leaf-spring, bulletproof truck. Its been hit up front and from the left side pretty hard by a car and a pole; Nothing was replaced, just banged back out as best as I could. The hit from the side actually bent the shackles holding the leafs on, but I still drove it like that for months before I came around to replace them. Truck is very strong; really can take a beating.

That Ford would look good with stacks coming out of the hood!! lol I guess a 70s one ton sounds best. Im gona have to go back to Nebraska to pick me up one I guess

I personally would use any truck that is already gone. As far as taking any old truck (any make) worthy of a new life I would sit out. On the Derby side, I do recall the Chyrsler Imperial's to become outlawed due to the integrity of the body. I wouldn't even do it myself but the early ones are STOUT. I don't mind seeing 4doors collide but a truck spectacle would be distasteful to me. JMO. Do what makes it work for you.

That's a sweet looking truck! Although I'm partial to GM's, I still like anything from the 60's, even the butt ugly Dodge's!
