front axle?

my front axle on my 49 is a 8 lug set up, really dont want it and i have yet to find a 5 lug conversion. My question is am i able to use the same axle but buy, i dunno spindles. I havent riped into it yet b/c i need it rolling still. I have been looking in about 5 books i have, can't find photo's or information regarding this set up, where did an 8 lug come from? Iv heard of a 3/4 ton hd. both front and back are 8 lug, if anyone is intrested let me know, or have an idea for getting a 5 lug conversion. thanks!

Re: front axle?

im kind of in the same situation with my 52 3/4 ton. I too want 5 lugs on the front to match the rear but all i ever see is disc conversions for 1/2 tons. So far there is no disc conversion on the market for out 3/4 ton AD trucks, which really sucks. Ive heard of people making their own kit, but im not sure of what they used. What ive decided to do is swap out the 3/4 ton axle for a 1/2 ton axle. Its basically a bolt up swap, all the 3/4 ton steering and suspension parts (ie tie rods, leaf springs and all other steering componants) seems that it will bolt right up to the 1/2 ton front I-beam axle. I have not done the swap yet, just waiting for funds for the disc brake kit, but I do have the 1/2 axle already so ive done alot of measuring to make sure everything will bolt up to it. This may be the route to take, you might even be able to find a front 1/2 ton axle for free. On http://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/ they have a freebies section and every now and then I see a few 1/2 ton front axles up for grabs. Hope this helps.

Re: front axle?

If your looking to retain the stock steering you need to find a complete axle and swap it out. Hub to hub

Re: front axle?

look around for a pr of front drums from a 53-54 car and you will have the 5 lug pattern you want
