383 stroker

I found a 383 stroker on craigslist that the guy said was rebuilt 200 miles ago, but started to pour oil from the valve cover filler hole. He's selling it super cheap, but me being a painter and not an engine mechanic; I want to make sure this is something simple to fix or adjust, or whatever.

Why would a motor do this, and what needs to be repaired? Thanks!!!

sounds like possibly blow-by, caused by rings not seated properly, bad rebuild, or worn out. did he break-in the engine?

Be careful buying a "just rebuilt" engine; if it was such a great build, why is he selling it - and especially "super cheap"? Look over all the records - he has all the reciepts, right?

I can't even imagine what would cause oil to "pour" from a valve cover.

I'm thinking corners were cut on the rebuild, and the whole engine hasn't turned out well. So, the current owner wants to unload it, instead of pulling it apart again. Now, maybe there's only a problem with the lifters and way too much oil is being pumped up to the top end.

Trouble is, you'd have to do a number of tests and pull the engine partially apart to be sure.
