But, it's my understanding, if you don't keep it, it can result in disastrous engine problems. I'll ask some of my racing buddies when I get a chance.

Re: need help with emisions garbage
Before the days of the PCV valve, Chevy used a "road tube" to vent the engine crankcase. The "canister" worked as a baffle. If this is what you are referring to, there should be a metal tube (or a place for one) just behind the intake and would run toward the bottom of the engine. I thought they just used them on 265 and 283 ci.

The guy that answered me used to do a lot of racing and he's probably forgotten more about putting engines together than most of us will ever know: I said: Back in the olden days of iron men and wooden ships, there used to be a canister looking thing under the intake manifolds. What was it for? If my memory serves, if it wasn't installed, the results could be disastrous. Am I right, or am I wrong? Folks other than me need to know. It is a crank case breather tube and it is there for the oil pressure. Give us a call

Re: need help with emisions garbage
I thought the canister was a charcoal canister, a purifier think. But could be wrong.
My 76 buick has one. Just more crap the gov thinks will change what comes out the tail pipe.

I believe you're thinking about the vapor canister. It collects the vapors released from the fuel tank and the carburetor. Then when the engine is fired, it sucks the vapors into the engine and burns them; which actually gives you a bit of fuel that would have been lost to evaporation in the old days.

Re: need help with emisions garbage
Does your block look like this? This hole was used for the road draft tube in small journal 327's

Won't your new manifold clear it? If it won't, PM me and I'll get on the phone to my buddy and PM back with his answer. Just be aware, he's a truck/heavy equipment mechanic so he works from like 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. PDT; so I won't call him until after 8:00 tonight. It's a courtesy thing. He needs a little time to eat some dinner, drink a beer, and relax a bit before I call him. So it'll be near, or after midnight, your time, before I'd PM back. Hopefully, before then, somebody else will chime in with some help.

Re: need help with emisions garbage
If you dont care about originallity you can remove those parts and seal the hole off and go with a pcv on one valve cover and a vent on the other like the later engines.

Re: need help with emisions garbage
you can remove it, just need to run a PCV system on the valve covers... which is better for your engine anyways. And, if it matters to you, it is a bit better on the environment too. The PCV system is a win/win system.
