big block vs Tranny
Well i just picked up my 454 today.. came out of a 84 3/4 ton turn key for $500
i think i got a good deal. ill get pictures later 350 staying in it another year im sure (while im building it). i want a Manual not an automatic just for the sake of keeping it simple. i plan on turning the BB into a 496 and ball park 500hp/600tq nothing to radical what tranny can i get that will hold this stocker or built up. was thinking a 5 or 6 speed out of a comaro ss or a corvette but i could use a few tips if anyone has seen this done or looked into it. running 4.10 rear end at them moment and ill only turn the motor 6k max. Ideas? facts?

Re: big block vs Tranny
in all reality, "to keep things simple" you'd want a TH400.

Re: big block vs Tranny
Agree with Longhorn Man on the simplicity of a TH400.
I don't know of many (make that "any") stock manual tranny's that'll handle 600 lbft of torque. Aftermarket tranny required, I think. And for those I'll bet you're going to spend more than $2000. The TH400 in my 454 powered 69 short Fleet works very well (that is until I "borrowed" the engine recently for my 70 Elky).

TH400 is what I suggest if you are on a budget.

Re: big block vs Tranny
I agree with longhorn man too! If the vehicle it is going is already set up with a stick then maybe OK. Putting a stick in a vehicle that was set up as an auto is not what I would consider simple. Nor quick but it can get dirty. Just some mindless thoughts from a 60 year old rodder. Later Specs

Re: big block vs Tranny
well when i said simple i meant i like the closed system and less moving parts to worry about later on. ill roll the th400 thing around but im still bumping the thread cause i would love to see someone else that has done it.

Re: big block vs Tranny
I know of no readily available stock manuals that could handle 600 tq. Sounds like an aftermarket, race ready manual or auto. Even a 400 would have to be built. Richmond maybe?

a Slightly built T56 from a camaro/corvette should be able to handle it.

Re: big block vs Tranny
I am going to buck the 400 trend...they tend to lose more HP in the driveline than a 350. There's a guy here that my friend knows who races a 600 hp BB with a built 350 behind it most every week...he's going to build my tranny [he builds trannies for a living].
As far as manuals go you can get a Richmond 5 or 6 speed [good to 600hp right oout fo the box]...might cost a bit, but if you are dead set on manual, these are the ones to look at. http://www.powertrax.com/01fivespeed.html http://www.powertrax.com/01sixspeed.html

Re: big block vs Tranny
ok i got a 84 454 out of a 3/4.. been told alot of times there isnt a 5 speed that will bolt up to it.. not sure why i gavfe up looking for one years ago.. wanted to get away form the granny tranny i had.. but would rather have a 5 spd, than the turbo 400 that is in my 76....so is there a 5 spd i can go get out of a junkyard that gonna bolt to my 84 454..
