burn baby,burn
I keep seeing reminders that I need to put a fire extinguisher in all my modified vehicles....
A guy over on the h.a.m.b. lost his truck, he said the fuel line on the manifold went, and he barley had enough time to get it out of the garage before it went up. FD arrrived in 10 minutes |

What a shame. That was a great looking truck. I have extinguishers all over my shop.

Re: burn baby,burn
I think the only extinguisher that's charged at our house is in the c10. Besides that, we don't have any.

Re: burn baby,burn
Wonder if it was a case of the old glass inline fuel filter... I have heard of many rides burning up because of them.. So Sad...

Re: burn baby,burn
That is a bummer, i have the same fear just because i do all the work myself on mine and i don't completely trust my own work. I stuck one in my passenger floorboard the day i brought it home for easy access.

Re: burn baby,burn
Sorry to see that happen. Probably caused by a reputured rubber fuel line or leaky old glass filter. Metal fuel lines cut down on the risk of that happening.
At every Good Guys show there is always a guy selling Halon fire extinguishers. Yes, they are expensive. $115 for 1.3 lbs. I had my son purchase one for our 1969 firebird at the first show we took the car too. After 4 years and a lot of $$$$$ doing a restomod I was not about to forget about the threat of fire. Ours is a handheld unit but there are even extinguihers that can be mounted in the engine compartment and automatically trigger by temperature. Great idea and worth every penny. http://www.firefight1.com/prod_ss-30.html |

Re: burn baby,burn
Man thats sad as heck. Kinda scary too. I have a rather long garage with a few cars in it and tons of various things which of course flamable if not careful. Do I have an extingisher in the garage? Just two water ones that I use often to knock down bees nest out side. I guess I should charge them and fill them and purchase some real ones too.
Damn that sucks and its going to make me paranoid now. |

Re: burn baby,burn
fire ext. in the 66 and in the house.
i had to use it once on the 66 when i blew the tranny up and the grass on the side of the road caught fire under it. if i would not have had it ,it would have burnt to the ground. the headers set the tranny fluid on fire, lighting the grass on fire, and my drive shaft broke and punctured my fuel cell.....

Re: burn baby,burn
Once I fire off the rebuilt 283 I may rethink that glass filter after all and go back to the old school metal canister. No extinguisher in the truck - just in the garage - and having seen this, that’s going to change too.

Re: burn baby,burn
I think I just puked after seeing those photos. I have a few 10# ABC extinguishers in my shop, but in a panic, I would probably soil myself first and then run around in circles trying to find them. I have few brand new ones in boxes on the shelf and this will be the catalyst that makes me install them in a few easily accessible and visible spots over the weekend. My shop is next door to a Fire Suppression/Halon/Ansul supply house, so I have no excuses.
PS-We all just discovered what to get our fellow truck enthusiasts for Christmas...fire extinguisher, a nice, practical gift. My girl friends dad gave fire extinguishers and first aid kits to all of his children and in-laws one year for Christmas and I remember everyone looking around with a "I wonder what Dad was thinking when he did this" look on their faces. I loved it because I knew I had a place in my shop for both. Happy Holidays and no more "trucks on fire" pictures...they are kind of a buzz-buster! |
