Rear Bumper Replacement
‘Farmer Bumper’ presently - ugly, heavy, diamond plate welded thing with detent for plate and tow ball. Want to go back to stock bumper and heavy-duty tow hitch (for my dory boat) mounted below on the frame, but there’s no body panel behind the existing bumper.
Is there a sheet metal supplier that makes these body pieces, or do have to go to a junk yard for this item?

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
The rear cross sill is the only factory piece that closes in this area. You can also install factory rock guards on top of the frame rail tail/bumper bracket to fill in a portion of this area also.
How about posting a picture of what you currently have and I will be able to get a better look at what you are dealing with. |

Different year in this photo - but same 'Green Acres' bumper - except mine’s really rusty and really needs to go in the dumpster.

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
Careful what you throw away! I threw one like that away thinking it was homemade only to find it was a factory option. One mans trash is anothers fortune.

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
I had a really ugly step bumper like that that the guy had filled the step portions with concrete for weight. I torched it off and dumped it, and the truck actually raised up a couple inches. It's also the reason there's no paint on the bottom of the bedsides.
I bought the brackets and a new bumper from LMC, and they fit up perfectly to the holes in the frame. |

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
Here is mine with a roll pan and bumper. I am making a custom hitch that will be behind the plate. The plate will have to come off in order to use the hitch.

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
Mine is like the pic above only painted/ i welded all the holes shut then welded it to the box looks cool-------put a reciever hitch on to do your towing, you could custom make the tube hole come through the bumper then cap it when your not using it ,just a idea?

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
You need a fold down license plate bracket like a '75-'79 Nova came with or an aftermarket one sold with hidden hitches. Then you flip the plate out of the way and slide the draw bar into the receiver hitch. I used to have a '76 Nova that I had turned into a quick street car and I saved the plate bracket off of my parts car for this same reason.

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
I don’t know guys - I’m rethinking this: That roll pan is looking pretty sweet.
As long as my new hitch can be made to clear the bottom, I may just go that way. It is a really clean look - without a bumper. Are there any legal questions that might come up - police or insurance wise?

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
Nope, roll pans are perfectly legal and your insurance won't be affected either.

Re: Rear Bumper Replacement
That is sick! The bumper looks like part of the body!
