need advice with dual tank

my brother has a 85 chevy dually with two tanks. one wont work he said he put a new switch in and that didnt help. where should we look from this point? thanks

Does the level indicator move when switching between tanks? If so then the signal is working. You should replace the tank switching valve under the bed. The part cost about $65 at NAPA. Get an origianl A/C Delco part. I've seen others just crap out too soon. The switching valve is either stuck or not working. Besure you have good voltage going to it too. Failure of the tank switching valve is very common in these trucks.

hey gchemist, no the level indicator dont move.i guess this would mean were getting no current to the switching valve? thanks

The only way to know if your switch is working is to use a voltmeter. Turn on the key and check the wires connecting to the tank switch. If there is current plug the switch back in. Leaving the key "on" have some stand down low by the passenger tank and have them listed for any valve movement. If you hear movement the valve may just be stuck with some debri in the line. Either way you should pull the pump off and try switching tanks. Odd are the switching valve is empty. Check the tank grounding wires too.
