Doing a few items on LILRED66
I have my '66 Chevy C10 (LILRED66) at my shop at my house, doing a few miscellaneous things. Not much to show for, but I have been chasing an electrical gremlin and dealing with a pinhole leak in my factory Harrison 4-core Desert Cooler radiator. As with most of my projects, they start with a "short-list" of a few items and before I know it, I have a full page of "things to do".
In any case, I am having the radiator dipped, to clean up the build-up and leak tested/repaired, as needed. I am also repairing a few cracks in the original V8 radiator shroud. I decided to replace the horn relay, voltage regulator and condenser, to make sure everything is up to snuff. I had already replaced all the wiring harnesses during the initial assembly about 5 years ago. The battery was bad, but luckily still under warranty, so I am putting in a new battery...the alternator checked out OK, so it is going back in. I also decided to do the headlight relay upgrade on the head lights, while I had it apart. While I am at it, I decided to install a factory battery box, since the old one was not correct. These items, along with replacing several mismatched fasteners and the tailgate chain assemblies, I should have enough to keep me busy for a few hours. Good eye...actually, I am installing the factory "hard pipe" arrangement with the short hose pieces at each end, like the one pictured below. I just haven't installed the hard pipe or radiator yet.

It is a factory washer bottle and mounting bracket. I need to check my inventory to see if I have an extra factory bottle and mounting bracket. |

Re: Doing a few items on LILRED66
I was wandering about the upper hose as well. Now I understand. Looking great.

Re: Doing a few items on LILRED66
I hate mismatched fastners!!!!.....I have spent so much time and many trips to the hardware store to get stuff and make everything uniform. Nothing like taking stuff apart and it requires 1/2 the tool box.
Hewlett kills me: took a second to see that.

Re: Doing a few items on LILRED66
I picked up this project about 5 years ago, in parts, from a fellow that had a change of heart. The photos are a little deceiving because the bed, cab and front clip were sit on the rolling chassis and loosely secured. The interior, engine bay, bed and plumbing were non-existent, so there was a lot of stuff involed, in putting it back together and getting it road-worthy.
In the process, I used the hardware, clips and fasteners I had available at the time. I have since acquired all the factory-style fasteners, clips and hardware, so when I pulled the radiator for repairs, I decided to replace those items with the factory-correct type. Although this truck is not "Number One" restoration, I wanted to have it as factory-correct as possible, with the parts/pieces I have available in my inventory. Plus, that beats needing to go to the hardware store and FLAPS several times during the process. Last edited by LILRED66; 01-07-2009 at 11:03 AM. |

Re: Doing a few items on LILRED66
I found a new reproduction radiator with the correct top & bottom tanks, although it is a three core instead of a four core. I found it at O'Reillys for about $200.00, plus tax. I check with many of the aftermarket truck parts suppliers and they were either way off or too expensive. I also checked several source online and they were about the same price as the unit I found at O'Reillys, so I figured I would go with it, since I could see it before I bought it. It was a direct bolt-in and appears to cool the truck properly.
I also did the headlight relay upgrade and that seemed to eliminate the electrical gremlin I was chasing. The headlights no longer flicker off and on. I need to do the final make-up of the plug at the radiator support, because the factory headlight harness at the radiator support is a two prong and the headlight relay plug is a three prong plug. I will take a few photos and post them, however they are not much to look at, since they are just the engine bay put back together. Thanks for checking in.
