anyone experienced shipping a grille?

I'm trying to buy a grille from another member. Anyone have some insight on the best method to ship one of these so it arrives safely without costing an arm and a leg?

I bought one off of ebay for my old 62 chevy. It came form Texas. It was bubble wrapped and in a couple long boxes taped together. i don`t remember it costing too much.

Fedex is has been the cheapest for me when shipping larger items. I have shipped grills, dash pads, bucket seats, door panels, and many other large items with no problems at all...most to board members here. It has never been to expensive. Ask Keith (lolife99) how his dash pad arrived from me.

I usually make my own boxes so they are as small as possible. I typically use newspaper to package them safely...and a lot of it. The key is to stuff it enough so te item won't slide around while not stuffing it too much that you bend the item trying to get everything in the box.

i sent a '64-'65-'66 GMC grill through fed ex, think it was under $50......it has been awhile ago though

I never shipped one, but when classic parts sent me my grilles they both came in a wood mini crate in a box with newspapers.

Bought an NOS grille for my 77 on ebay, the original GM box, alayer of bubblewrap and a box taped together on the outside with fibered tape. Came from the west coast to PA for $25.00 completely damage free.

Just wanted to add a little "shipping" tip from a 22 year UPS driver. Make a duplicate shipping label and place it inside the box. I've seen labels get torn off or damaged causing the package to never arrive at it's intended destination. The first thing we'll do is open the package and try to locate the destination.

Also, keep in mind when packing items for shipment, your package will be one of millions in the system. Make sure yours can stand up to riding in a trailer with 2000+ boxes ranging from 1 lb to 150lbs.

I did about the same with a 73 grille, it was a pain to build the box for it,
and then wrap it in bubba wrap. It was more labor that what I got out of the
grille.

Next time I will get some old 1x4 boards and build a crate/frame around it,
(with some kind of padding in between of coarse) and staple the cardboard
pieces to the crate/frame. That would make it a lot stronger than just
cardboard, and I would think faster to build.

the more soft stuff you can pack it with the better most shipping companies throw packages around.

My first one got shipped in a lopsided box full of bubble wrap. It arrived with a crack in it.

The second one came supported with 1x2" oak strips taped to it in a box it fit along with styrofoam on the ends for support and wrapped in bubble wrap. It arrived in mint condition.
