Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
breathing in diesel... NOT good. if you get this before you head home... you should probably think about a wood stove in the shop, or just extra clothes.
diesel heaters in the shop can be harmful and fatal http://healthandenergy.com/deadly_diesel_fumes.htm It might seem like no big deal... but this can give you serious problems... You saw the way people reacted, right? this was not a normal way for board members to react. this reaction was out of EXTREME concern.

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
but, besides that mess.... 68 or later, because you have acc holes on heads, pre 81 because of dipstick location, 73-74 because of alternator and accessory locations... what year did GM start casting numbers behind the alternator? If you can't find any, then they are behind the drivers side head... VERY hard to get to/see.
1 vote for 350 because of rams horns, 1 vote for 350 because of ballancer, couple votes for 327 (don't know why)

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
Glad you`re alright. You were prolly oxygen deprived as well as mildly poisoned by carbon momoxide. It`s a silent killer. My friend Pete is dead from staying in hiis shop late working on his own stuff (`72 shortbed) and breating exhaust. His brother found him dead on the floor in the morning. It was a family owned shop,Father,2 sons, and daughter.Pretty hard to take.
The 327s and all early small blocks had the oild spout in the manifold. The question is was that ever changed. My guess relies on it being original to the motor.Check for notcked balancer while you`re getting your hair dirty next time. Hey Ellen!!! I built a`68 truck large journal 327(steel crank) witing or my`67 project.I can`t wait to run it.You have impeccable taste imn motors.

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
http://www.mortec.com/location.htm read this article
quote " The block casting number on smallblock and big block Chevy V-8 motors is located on a ledge found at the rear of the block, most often on the driver's side. This ledge is below the deck of the block and the ledge forms the mating surface between the block and the transmission bellhousing. Some of the later model blocks have the casting number on the passenger side of this ledge. The number itself can have 6, 7 or 8 numeral digits. They might look like this "361959" or "3970010" or "14015445". The block casting numbers do not have any letters in them. There are sometimes individual letters found on blocks like "GM" or "CFD" for the Central Foundry Division, but they are not part of the block casting number. Also some of the later blocks have the size of the motor shown in liters. You may see a "5.0" (305) or "5.7" (350) cast on the rear ledge of a smallblock or a "7.4" on the side of a big block 454. On the side of some later blocks the last three digits of the block casting number are cast into the block, but these are difficult to see when the engine is in a vehicle." un quote

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
interesting. I don't have anything with a small block anymore... but I was always able to get those numbers with nothing but a flashlight, and sometimes a can of brake clean and a rag.
