Should I got 2/4 or 4/5?

I have an 87 silverado shortbed. This summer I will be taking the bed off for body work and while the truck is laid up for awhile, I will be adding a lowering kit. Not sure if I want to go 2/4 or 4/5.

The truck is a daily driver. The most I ever haul in the bed are 2 dirt bikes. I do have an open 5x8 utility trailer I sometimes tow with various junk etc. The roads here in CT are not that friendly either. Basically, I don't tow/haul much but if one day, I wanted to hook up something like a car trailer (to probably bring home another Chevy Truck lol), I don't want to find out I can't because I lowered it too much.

If I go 2/4, I will probably use 255/70/15 tires I have. If I go 4/5 I will swap on 235/60/15 tires I have.

If I do the 4/5 I will absolutely put in a c-notch as well as new lowering shocks on all 4 corners. I don't want to be bottoming out.

Basically, the pros and cons I see for each kit are:

2/4: Pros: Cheaper than a 4/5, no C-notch needed. Cons: May not be low enough

4/5: Pros: Will probably look better than a 2/4. Cons: More expensive than a 2/4, more work required, may ride a bit rougher up front since I would have to use lowering springs with the lowering spindles as well as possible alignment issues due to the springs).

I know the 4/5 seems to have alot of cons for me, but the fact that a 2/4 wouldn't be low enough is also a big con for me.

So, for a daily driver with occasional hauling/towing, which kit should I go with?

I will repeat my often used line as advice. I never hear anyone say they lowered it too much. I frequently hear people say they want toi lower it more. Go 4/5 and be done with it. As for towing, add a small "helper" bag and you can tow what ever you want.

I agree. While you can go lower from a certain point.. I do believe you can go TO low tho.

When you scrape over speed bumps.. that's a bit low for my liking and we have some really nasty speedbumps around where I live.

True, you can go too low with a static drop. Since he was asking about 2/4 and 4/5 I didn't think that would be an issue.

i to am interested in his question. but my question is if you c-notch the rear and have helper bags, what if you are towing a flat bed trailer and a car on it, while there is stuff in youre bed? i am not worried about draggin but will the c-notch be strong enough?

by helper bags you mean no compressor just the bag u air up via air compressor for added strength....

great, the list of suspension brake parts just got more expensive........

no matter how cheap you think it will be multiply it by 3 add $100.00 then through all that stuff away and youre gona spend 3g on a full air ride kit to lay frame

dont wanna do that...example..

dads friend has a ford f250 wtih bags in the rear, they help keeping the rear from sagin while pullin his huge 5th wheel camper...he dont have an onboard compressor or anything...there manual...id like to haul at least 500+ lbs. in the back of my truck...would the bags help while pullin a trailer and stuff....this makin any sense lol thanks

I just 'finished' my 2/4 drop on my '71. I bought 2 1/2" drop spindles and 4" drop springs for the rear.
This got me 2" lower up front and nearly 5 1/4 out back. Ended up pulling the front springs and cutting a half a coil out to give it a bit of a rake as it right at level if not just a tad high in the front.

I agree 100% I was sick the day i had my 2/4 drop installed. I walked out of the shop and to be honest, couldn't tell enough difference to justify the check that i had just wrote. Go with the 4/5.

If you go with a bolt in c-notch your frame will be fine. I prefer to weld in a boxed section to ensure it will never sag.

I have had a few trucks with the small helper bags. Some just ysed schrader valves to fill, and one I had set with a compressor. Either way will work fine, but the small "on board" compressor was much faster than the portable units.

so with a c-notch that is nboxed like that you belive the frame will be strong enought to tow a 2000 lbs trailor with a car or truck on top of it?
