1949 3100. clutch issues - mice?
clutch worked ok last year. now started out slipping some, and the more i used it, the worse it got. now won't even move. mice got in it last winter. i was told that if they fill the clutch up with nesting stuff, it will get in the fingers and prevent the clutch from engaging.
so, is there a easy way to get at the clutch? what do i need to do, and how do i do it? thanks

You can remove the cover plate on the bottom to inspect. I've never heard of mouse nests causing a problem there. The only way to inspect the throwout bearing is to pull the tranny. Not an easy job. The reprint of the shop manual does a good job of describing this.
Go to http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/ and scroll down to the 48-51 truck shop manual. Clutch removal starts on page 6-88. Tranny removal is page 7-4.

i say burn them out get the clutch hot by slipping it and if there's anything in there it should turn to ashes. most likely your rear main seal is leaking or your clutch has had enough

One other possibility is the pullback (retracting) spring. If it is broken or unhooked the clutch will not remain engaged. Usually starts slipping at speed or under load. The clutch will still be toast, but then you know why.
