'Yard dog gets a wing.
I've been scullin' on this job for way too long, just had to get started. Headache bar is 2 X 2 X 14 Ga. tubing, stacks are 2.5 In. 8'8" to the top of the wing.(have to walk for the whoppers now, lol) The cab is gonna change color, to white, so I think I'll paint the bar an bed the same. I picked up a set of chrome stack floppers, so I think the stacks are gonna be BBQ black.
Any suggestions for a CSOB set of heat shields? RED, |

Most any big rig (tractor/ trailer or over the road truck) supply house. also availible from JC Whitney catalog. Given your location, it might be cost effective to have a local metalsmith custom build one for you. I can easily send you the measurements. Paul

Re: 'Yard dog gets a wing.
A 32 ft tag stacker/carhualer and occasionally, a 6 horse side load gooseneck.
And as my other half is so fond of pointing out "it aint about need" Mostly, I just enjoy intimidating the "nearly dead's" with the stacks and the ricers challenging for lane choice, with the air horns. RED |

Re: 'Yard dog gets a wing.
Wow, it's amazing what a little paint and a diamond plate deck will do for appearance!

Re: 'Yard dog gets a wing.
Good looking rig... however I would imagine the wing would do more good closer to the cab. As it is now the wind is going under the wing and still hitting the trailer. If the wing was closer to the cab the wind would at least be headed "up" when it hit the top of the trailer. Just my $0.02..
My Grandfather and Uncle both ran wings on their trucks while pulling their 5th wheel travel trailer and boats when I was younger.

Re: 'Yard dog gets a wing.
I did some SWAG type engineering trials, watching how the fog and rain flowed over the cab, to the wing and over the trailer. At speed, it seemed to break into three pretty much equal parts of the airflow. Under the rig and to the sides at about the top of the bumper, up at the base of the windshield and up again just below the leading edge of the wing.
The exhaust from the stacks is pretty hard to see but a short run with the car trailer showed no smut on the front of the trailer, as there was before the wing. I made provisions for adjusting the wing angle, but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I did learn that rain on the wing is NOISY, you can hear it plainly, even over the stack noise. (flappers) Also, the tail lights on the wing mount reflect off the trailer front, in the dark, and bounce off the tool box top to the wink mirror. Kind of a dazzling red glow. I've got a slider rear window with dark tint ready to go in place of the stock one that should stop all that. Yea, I know, I've been WAY over thinking this thing, but a Kaam style ducktail is in the works for the trailing edge of the 32 Ft trailer top. A couple of marine style vents at floor level in the trailer and the roof vents cracked, I might get a little airflow through the trailer, maybe. RED |
