'89 Suburban trans. pan observation
Anyone else have this problem with their '89 suburban - when I just want to do a simple transmission fluid change, I can't remove the trans. pan without first removing a crossmember support that the trans. sits on. And of course I first have to support the trans. before I can remove the cross member. I have tried each time to wiggle the back(aft) edge of the trans. pan past the cross member, but always end up removing the cross member to get it out of the way. Is this what everyone else has to do or is it just me? Thanks for any insight.

Ive got an '89 with 700r4,I changed mine right after I got it,it was a pain to get out but,I didnt have to remove the crossmember.Is yours a 4wd?Mines a 2wd.

Pull it out once and install a drain plug.

It's a 700 r4 and a 2wd. Maybe I'm just missing something, just seems like they could have designed it just a little different - it wouldn't have taken much, maybe a quarter of an inch. And I was wondering if most get their trans. rebuilt or just buy a rebuilt unit?

I have not recently tried this but I used to work in the quick lube industry about 15 yrs ago. It was very common then to have to remove x-members on 700R equipped trucks to remove the pan and get to the filter. S-10's were the most common that come to mind. I can't remember if the fullsize trux were the same way.
We always used to place a standard bottle jack on the underside of the tail shaft. WARNING: If it's 4WD, do not place it on the bottom side of the transfer case. With enough jacking the head of the jack will go right through the aluminum case of the TC with no problem and then you will be hosed. Lube flowing everywhere and you'll have to replace it. JB Weld wont fix it.

Always use a wood block between the tranny and the jack. Doesnt tend to break things as often
