How hard is this swap?
I was wondering if anyone has swapped 67/68 GMC 4x4 gear to a 51-53 truck. I know anything is possible with a little work but was wondering what expected or unexpected differences there would be. (In other words...how easy or how hard it would be LOL)

The ones I have seen have ended up as cobbled up messes.
here is a start on a similar one http://kpr.craigslist.org/cto/1258989840.html |

Re: How hard is this swap?
i would definately go with other front axles than 60/68.
you can get open knuckle 10b/d44 all day long an they are the same measurements as the crappy closed knuckle stuff. |

Re: How hard is this swap?
I used a 74 drive train on the 59 frame and springs for my 4x4 conversion. I believe the frame and sping width is the same for the AD trucks, 34". Major issues are steering and brakes but not any worse than a disc or front clip conversion. Because the AD trucks are a little narrower the tires stick out beyond the fenders, you can decide if that is something you like for looks and practically (lots of crud thrown up on the sides of you rig if you use it). I would agree that you should stay with newer open knuckle stuff, easy to get spare and replacement parts.
Blackdiesel: are the jeep 44 axles narrower than GM?

Re: How hard is this swap?
I happend to have a flanged Dana44 from a jeep laying in the garage. It IS much narrower than a Chevy dana44. I can measure when I get home if you would like and then someone can compare...

Re: How hard is this swap?
There was a truck in the Pacific Northwest that sat on a Jeep Wagoner (sp?) chassis that showed up at some of the northwest rod runs years ago. It sat down a bit lower than stock and you didn't notice that it was four wheel drive until someone pointed it out.
This rig showed up in show coverage on Hotrod hotline. http://www.hotrodhotline.com/feature...edjuly4_15.php It doesn't look bad but could be improved by using 1-1/2 ton front fenders with the big openings and matching the lip on the back fenders. Also notice that the running boards don't line up right with the bottom of the cab. |

52 4x4
Sorry to revive this post but I knew I had seen this truck on the internet somewhere (and Kijiji Toronto). It says "Hot Wheels" on the tailgate.
