box not straight
I have a 1969 gmc long box I have re build almost everything but I have the box on and the left rear is an 1 inch lower than the right so when you look at the rear the turck does not look straight. I have checked everything and all looks straight with a tape measure the springs are 4 inch drop and the same size and thickness left to right I even swaped the spring and still the same is there any shims that can be put under or over the spring to stiffen and lift the left rear or would it be best to drop the right to match any help would be great thanks

Re: box not straight
Do your cab corners body line and the body line on the bed match up. If not you might need new cab mounts.

Re: box not straight
yes the cab mounts are new and the front edge of the box lines up nice to the cab but the right rear is high and I have a inch at the wheel well and the rear corner looks high if I put a jack on the edge of the box and lift it up a slight bit on the left rear everything is good that is why i was thinking of a spacer under the spring to lift it up a bit

Re: box not straight
Think of it this way.....do you want it straight when the truck is just setting or going down the road? I bet when you set in it, it is level.
I know from experience that you can shim just one side of the bed. It's not uncommon for a "truck" to get a little tweaked. You can shim all of one side or just part of one side. If it aligns at the cab then just shim it at the back. DO NOT shim the spring unless you have dueling bangos playing in the background. Just shim between the bed and the frame!! |

Re: box not straight
that was the other thing i was thinking of just put some small spacers in the left rear to lift the box up a bit. the front is perfect I like the idea of a few spacers in the box to the frame spots thanks

Re: box not straight
I've always thought that was normal. All the trucks I've had have been tweeked to some extent. On the '70 I have now the bed is twisted to the point that it's noticeable from several angles. But then again, I've always used my trucks as trucks, and not one has had an easy life even though I've taken care of them.
It has always annoyed me though. Let us know if shims help. |
