Sympathy for the Rust Belt!
I have been driving around the rust belt for three days now...Lisle, IL - Peoria, IL - South Bend, IN - Milwaukee, WI and have only seen five 67-72 trucks! I can't drive 0.5 miles from my house without spotting that many. You guys really have my sympathy...only two of these trucks I spotted were runners! Maybe you guys have them locked up for the winter still...but the weather is sunny and nice...what gives...LOL!

The trick around here is to find where they like to hide...in my little town (pop: 3k) there are at least 3, counting my GMC, but it was imported from Minnesota.
What I don't get is why do all the cool old trucks hide in the Pacific Northwest? When I was on my quest to find a truck, it seemed like all the nice ones were in Washington. I almost bought a 1956 GMC Napco dumptruck that was owned by the state of Oregon. I've never seen any of the old Task Force trucks around here, save for car shows. It seems like all the clean old Chevies, GMC's, Fords, and Dodges hide out there, and that's about the only place you can find an International truck or Scout with little rust, I say little because NO International light vehicle ever escaped the curse of the rust. Damn those salted roads...damn them.

Well mine is still in Green Bay without license or insurance on it (she's still sleeping for the winter). Plus, up here in da U.P., we just got another 26 inches of snow last weekend. Puts a damper on things pretty quick.

I'll be in Green Bay tomorrow about noon. Then back to Seattle tomorrow night. I wish there were an inexpensive way to get some of those NW trucks to you guys here. We have lots of rain but no salt because it seldom freezes in the major metropolitan areas...therefore no salt!!!! Yippeee!
I saw an abandoned '67-'68 C-30 watertruck on the way to Peoria that looked to be a starting point...only missing a door and it had minor dents. Unmolested paint. The other two abandoned trucks were '67-'68 red farm trucks...sitting in the weeds. No short beds! I saw one daily driver on the way into South Bend off highway 20...wonder if it was a board member?

Too bad I'm not down there right now, or I'd meet up with you.
I hate roadsalt...... Shortbeds are definitely a rarity around here. Nearly all of them were low-optioned farm or work trucks. I found this gem sitting in the junkyard in upper michigan. I got it for $150, which included a 283. She's pretty rough, but if nothing else it's a straight shorty frame, right? :p Does anybody want anything off of it?

Can I get that bed into my suitcase? I don't care how bad it is those short fleets are worth repairing! It does look pretty rusty but the bed does not look that bad. I guess looks can be decieving though.

There's only one door on it.
Anyways, on my way to the gym today, I saw a GMC shortbed 4x4 plow truck. It's been sitting there for awhile now. People up here like to use "beaters" for plow trucks and keep their daily drivers nice. I know of at least this truck and two other 4x4 blazers that are DEDICATED plow trucks. Damn man, use a toyota or something instead!!

Hey 67 Lsi Swb I am just an hour south of Green Bay. Just cold and windy here. Hope that snow stays north. But you are right, the salt really does do in a lot of vehicles here in the rust belt.

Yeah, the rust belt is no joke.
This is why there aren't many ppl in my area into the 73 - 87 trucks. |

Hey Andy, that truck is a cream puff. Looks better than most of the stuff I restore.

67LS1 and Dream,
I can't wait, I'll be back there in May. I'm from Oneida Reservation surrounding Green Bay, but got the H out of the cold and snow years ago. I actually growed up near Milwaukee, and hope to start a south to north car and truck connection, as there is so many clean vehicles down here, and people here don't even think about it. |

dtlilly,
Let me know when you get up this way. We'll have to meet up. I actually live on the Rez on the Hobart/Lawrence town line. After recently being to Oklahoma, I'm never buying a vehicle from up here again!!

Hey 67 LS1 SWB - what kind of shape are the trim pieces that go around the grill openings in?? If they are straight and rust free, then I am interested ... I am looking for some nice, straight, rust free peices to have plated.
Thanks! |

67LS1, I graduate college on May 11, and want to come up after that to go Muskie fishing in Vilas County (Plum lake in Sayner). I'll be back at the beginning of July for the Oneida Pow Wow, and maybe stay for the Menomonie Pow Wow. Then I plan to be back in Milwaukee at the end of August for Harley Davidsons' 100 year anniversary.
Geez, sounds like I need to stay up there for the summer, since I plan on studying for my GMAT and LSAT exams, as I don't know if I'm going to get an MBA or a Law degree next. Gotta love being a member of a Tribe with 4 casinos, that is willing to send you to school AY? |
