Firewall grommet/connector

What is the proper procedure for taking out the firewall grommet? The main one where the blinker light plug is the top half and the other main portion is the bottom half. The inside and outside portion appears to be some rubber material that has I am sure hardened up but what about the inside plug portion? I want to take it out so I can clean it up and reuse it. This is on a '64 C10. Thanks!!

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

I would first try and spray it with some silicone spray where the plug contacts the rubber. Then push it to the inside of the cab. If it doesn't come out with a little persuasion, I would just cut the rubber and remove the plug. You can buy the rubber grommet new and I don't think they're much $$.

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

I will try that tomorrow. Just so I understand, the plug is held in place by the rubber? I am trying to crawl underneath my dash to get a good look at it but I can't really see it well.

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

That grommet holds one part of the plug in place, then the light harness plugs in...if your able to push the connector out of the grommet, then the grommet might colapse a bit to be removed.

You could also try a heat gun/hair dryer to soften the rubber too.

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

Thanks Chief! Btw is that the way it is designed to be removed? I am sure that plastic firewall plug has become somewhat brittle and forcing it the wrong way might break it. I will try it this afternoon, thanks again!

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

Yeah that grommet is rubber. They usually get hard from the heat in the engine compartment......and just old age.

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

Ok I got it out, tried pulling and pushing and all of that. Finally I took a big screwdriver and worked it out. I left some marks on the outside of the casing but nothing that will show. Even after taking it out I couldnt find a good way to do it.

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

Here's one source for the grommet. I’m not sure if you can buy the connector as a separate piece or have to buy a harness:

Re: Firewall grommet/connector

why do you need a new connector? The grommet usually comes as a kit of about 6 pieces with all the grommets. I have one and a harness if interested!
