I went to MCRD San Diego this morning to watch my brother's nephew graduate and had a heck of a time enjoying my morning coffee on the drive there because I don't have a cup holder (yet). I have an idea or 3, but I'd like to see how some of you folks cured the "I don't have enough hands to drive and drink coffee" problem.

I've got a big, heavy wooden box that was made for the floor. It's kind of not exactly, you know, beautiful, but it is actually pretty handy.

MCRD, wow I have not set foot there since I graduated back in 1996.. Boy do I have some memories from that place.. I need to figure out a cup holder too. I just dont want something cheezy or something 80's.

My memories of MCRD are very good. I just go there for vehicle decals (DOD) and I.D cards.....I just retired from the Air Force (after 1/2 a career in the Army and the last 1/2 AF....20 1/2 years total). My dad was a D.I. at MCRD in the late 40's/early 50's sometime (retired in '68) and my oldest brother was a Marine (ETS'd around '81 with 7 1/2 years). I have very few memories of living on Camp Pendleton. I don't have any "flash-backs" entering either base.

I like these that HRM put in one of their project trucks. I don't see this being practical unless you have a high performance, street/strip cruiser.

You could get one of those plastic floor model console from the store and then you could take it out for show.

That's what I use, one of those plastic bench seat carriers with the adjustable cup brackets. I'm running bucket seats and it just sits on the floor between the seats. I don't have any good pictures of it since I generally take it out if I'm taking pics or going somewhere it will be seen.

It's very handy though. I also have plenty of ugly memories of MCRD having gone through in 1966. Glad to see I'm not the only jarhead in the mix.

I was going to use some of these. I put some of thier anodized stuff in my bass boat (gauge rings, grab handles and cup holders) and it looks great. Lots of colors and very nice. Check out Rex Marine and Livorsi Marine. They have all kinds of cool stuff.

I made small console around my shifter and installed a cup holder from a 90-97 Miata - works great!

I dig that steering wheel, is that a vette wheel? it looks smaller.

No, it's a Covico wheel. They were all the rage in the early 60's. I think they started out as boat wheels, and caught on with street rods. "Everybody" had one when I was in high school. They are similar to Grant steering wheels, except the spokes are in a "Y" configuration (equally spaced around the rim), where the Grant wheel is more of a "T" shape, and when spinning it around you can tell by the wheel which way is straight ahead. The Grant has a deeper dish (more like 4 inches).

Since these were inexpensive when new, it's almost impossible to find a good one now since the chrome didn't hold up well. The one in the pic above is the most popular size, 14.5" with the standard dish. The other one I have really looks like an early Corvette - it's 15.5 with a flat dish:

I was kinda hopeing to see one that was built into the dash? I've seen some plactic ones like that but I want a metal one.

Hey thanks!!! I just googled it and they still make them, now in white plastic which would look good maybe since part of my paintjob will be white.

For the '67-'72's they have those cup holder assemblies that replace the ash tray. Maybe you could make something that would replace the ashtray in your truck? That is unless you plan on using the ash tray. Just an idea.

I was thinking something "under dash" that slides out. There's a couple options already made that'll work, but they look like they'll vibrate too much (noisey & splash). I was also thinking about something that'll fit onto the front of the seat frame that'll move with the seat (bench seat) and not have to drill any holes anywhere.
