Vortec V6 in a '66??

Has anyone looked into installing a newer V6 into one of our trucks? I was thinking of a Camaro or something like that with a 5 speed. Does anyone make anything to hook up the fuel inj. etc. I would like the increased horsepower but would also like increased fuel economy. It would give me overdrive, the sound of a 6 split exhaust and something different all at the same time. Hopping up my 292 is quite expensive for the horsepower gain, and I would still be needing another gear or two for any kind of mileage. I have a short stepside 66 with a 292 and a car 4 speed saginaw. Thanks, taclem

If you take a look at some of the builds over on the 47-59 section of this board, there's several guys who have done the S-10 swap and kept the V6. sgtusmc is one, but if I remember right, his is a 2.8 but there are others who have used the 4.3

4.3 would be the way to go. Bolts right in using the same mounts as SBC.

The 4.3 is great, my friends has one in his S10 with a 5speed an 3.08 rear, gets 20mpg+ everywhere he goes. Pretty decent power too.

The 4.3 (262ci) is the same bore and stroke as a 350. 4.00 bore 3.48 stroke. They just cut off two cylinders. It is a great engine. Here is a good formula that is easy to use to figure out Cubic Inch Displacement. This Formula is for 8 cylinders.
Bore X Bore X Stoke X 6.2832 (Common Denominator for V8)=CI

If you need to calculate for more or less cylinders divide the CD 6.2832 by 8 then multiply by the # of cylinders you are working with. This will give you the new CD for your equation.

4.3 is an awesome motor, as said it is basically a V8 cut short and you can use many of the same bolt on accessories. Only thing you may need to accomodate for is the cooling fan, it may be too far away from the radiator, and you may want to just use an electirc fan.

That would be a great idea...in fact, I have a 2000 4.3 Vortec I was saving for a Samurai project that I might be willing to let go !!

Complete with 'stand-alone' wiring harness...ready to go !!!

All of the V8 accessories bolt right on. Use a fan shroud from a 85-up blazer or C10 that was equipped with 4.3.

Sounds just like mine. I put a K&N intake, JBA headers and a Magnaflow exhaust on mine and it sounds awesome now. Fun to drive and gets decent mileage.

Re: Vortec V6 in a '66??

I am in the process of putting my 54 GMC on an S10 chassis... I am keeping the 4.3 and 4L60E tranny... I bought my wiring harness from Fuel Injection Specialities in Texas.. I know it ran really strong in the S10 so I am thinking the GMC is not too much heavier.. I am still in the process of cleaning it up.. I cut an oil bath air cleaner apart and put a air filter in it and the top engine cover sitting on the engine now is off of a BMW and I put a GMC badge in the center.
