Ok - so here's the point where you find out they are not "exactly" the same....apparently the transfer case shift lever is "coarse" thread and the transmission shift lever is "fine" thread Nothing that a couple minutes with a 7/16 fine thread tap couldn't fix:



And here we are, back in business:



Total time investment: about 15 minutes; dollar investment of about $3.00 (for shipping).

I guess that's not entirely true: I noticed the engine seemed to run "too cool", that is, the needle on the temp gage wouldn't come up to the first mark. I had heard that there are some problems with sending units reading cold when actually the engine is running at the right temp. The best way to check I'm told is to use an infared gun and check the temp at the thermostat housing. Then you know if it is the sender or the thermostat. As the sender gets hot the resistance is supposed to fall that is why you can check the gage by shorting out the wire to ground and the gage should read full hot.

Thanks; I hadn't heard that. I will check it out (...although I have some degree of confidence it may have been the thermostat since changing it seems to have made a difference).

As I recall from HS physics, as an electrical component rises in temp, its' electrical resistance increases.

that is true with most, but not all.....
a positive temperature coefficient is as you described, temperature rises=resistance rises (examples include: incandescent bulbs and motor windings)
a negative temperature coefficient is just the opposite, temperature rises=resistance falls (examples include: thermistors and semi-conductors)

I am not sure if the temperature coefficient of a sending unit is positive or negative though....

9/12 & 9/13 2009 Edition:

1) Finished the door opening on the driver's side (paint, added the new weatherstrip and door sill plate)

2) Painted the pickup box (it's about 98% done; pics to come later)

3) Started on the inside of the doors:

Where did you pickup the vinyl floor covering? I've always liked it better than carpeting...as long as there was a good thick mat installed beneath.

Seriously, I had one project one time that was actually DONE. I redid a Farmall tractor and once it was refurbished I never had to work on it again.

It was a very cool feeling (...very different from having a race car. Race cars are never done...):

No - it stayed with the house when we sold it. The tractor was the "deal maker" - the buyer and I were a few thousand apart on the price of the house. He said "...I'll pay your price if you throw in the big red tractor and the 'broken' tractor...".

I was teasin'....we built about three and a half million trucks during the 7 years that I was there.

It's unlikely I would remember it (unless it was one that got dropped, or smashed or something...)
