Anyone ever rstore the 69-70 hood emblem blue insert?
Has anyone ever done this thing I am asking? I have taken one apart and thought that the plastic part was blue and all I had to do was repaint with some silver reflective and part good as new, but the plastic part is clear and the blue has to be laid on then silver reflective, I think. Any of the gurus do that before or is this a case of "buy the aftermarket and forget about it". I tried to find an NOS one but no dice. I do have an aftermarket one but thought I would try...

I haven't ever tried that one BigDon, but have experience reverse spraying backlit signage.
Try denatured alcohol and an old stiff paint brush or solvent brush to strip it. If that doesn't do it I would next try EZ-Off oven cleaner. It will strip a lot of types of paint and doesn't seem to damage most plastics. Spray the bowtie and put it in an appropriate size zip lock bag and spray more into the bag. Should do a pretty good job overnight but you will probably have to scrub in the grooves a lot. Another choice is lacquer thinner, but if they are made out of polycarbonate or lexan they will melt into a blob when washed with that. I think that those emblems are probably some sort of plexiglass since they break so easily so the lacquer thinner might work fine. To paint just use some sort of non-lacquer base candy paint like Testors candy model car paint as it is translucent. Real hard to say how many coats, I'd test on a piece of glass and back up with the silver. If you don't like it you can just use a razor blade scraper to do the majority of the removal in a couple strokes and try it again. I hope this helps. Later---DAC
