Who needs Brakes! Right?
Hi Guys,
I just bought a 1972 GMC 4x4 Fleetside. I'm pretty sure the entire brake system is shot from Master Cylinder to Calipre. Can I use the disc conversion kit for the 67-70 GMC to replace the brake system on my '72? Also, I noticed all the upgrade kits seem to be for 2wd trucks. Since the way I drive requires good brakes, is there a brake upgrade for the 4x4? Maybe dual piston, slotted rotors? Thanks Guys, I appreciate your help. Re: Who needs Brakes! Right?
You shouldn't need a conversion kit since you've got discs on there already. I just finished a front disc swap on my '70 GMC and you're right, there really isn't a full kit out there for the 4x4...there are plenty for the 2wd though.
If everything is really shot, then it sounds like you either need to go to the junkyard or parts store to replace whats warn out. Maybe try the easy stuff first though and see if it helps (new pads, new shoes, bleed the system with new fluid) Also, IMO, you bought the wrong vehicle if you're looking for "performance" brakes. You probably won't be late-braking your GMC into any high speed corners.

Re: Who needs Brakes! Right?
That's what I figured.
How would you say the stock brake system handles a 4500lb trailer and a quad in the back. Will I be able stop this rig in a reasonable distance? |
