project shorty 84
Hi, I would like to introduce myself because I am a new member to the site. My name is Jason and I live in minnesota and have always loved the c10's. The story begins with finding an ad on craigslist for a 84 c10 for $1500, so I couldnt help myself. Going into it I knew it needed new gears due to a nice shutter/vibration at speed. So for some reason I did the opposite, instead of fixing it and just driving it, I ordered up a DJM suspension 3/4 kit for it spindles, hangers, shackles, shocks.....then after it was installed i started sanding/chemically striping and then the sanding turned into sandblasting. Then that turned into dent pulling and filling/smoothing....well that leaves me to where i am now. Figuring out what to do with the rust in the interior near the kick panels and the floorboards. I will get some pics on here soon, I dont know why I didnt take any pics at the begining of the build i am sure i will kick myself for that.
The plan is to make the truck a daily driver and to haul my motocross bike in the back,,my other truck is a crewcab duramax and putting bikes in the back of that is no fun. I just want to get the thing straight and reprimed and blocked before the real snow flies and work on the cab patching this winter. I think that is a reasonable expectation out of myself for being new at this. 1984 c10 short box, 350/t350, blue buckets, baby blue when i bought it. wants- black/charcoal interior, newer buckets, new gauges, 5.3 with overdrive tranny. I will get you guys some pics. |

Re: project shorty 84
Welcome to the board, fellow 84 owner! I look forward to seeing your pictures. I used to have a crewcab duramax too and even though it was 2wd it was so tall I couldn't put anything in the bed. So I lowered it 8 inches. Now that the duramax is long gone I wish I had spent all that extra cash on my 84.

Re: project shorty 84
I have some pictures i found at home from my camera, the truck has been blocked and had a ton of body work done to it since these pics. I stripped the truck down and then primed it with ncp270 , then blocked it to find all the bad spots in the body. After i found all the bad spots i repaired them with a stud welder, and smoothed with rage gold. I also filled a bunch of holes in the body and bed rail with my new little miller...nice unit,,,first time i have welded too. I have been calling my buddy who works on cars for help, he lives 250miles away. So now that i have the body work almost straight i guess i will put on 3 nice wet coats on it so it can sit in the garage all winter without rusting while i do the rocker, floor pan work?
here are some pics, of it a couple months ago earlier in the process. The bed is going to be line-x'd so i never stripped it. Last edited by low_84_inchaska; 10-16-2009 at 09:17 AM. |

Re: project shorty 84
alright i got the interior tore out of this badboy to see how bad the floor pans and inner rockers are and it is bad news......i will post some pics tonight for yall to see and to get me some advice. I also want to get some new seats in there and am wondering what buckets will work from gm trucks with little or no serious modifications...i dont want to put my old suburban buckets back in. I have an oppertunity on some 2002 tahoe leather buckets and some 99 power silverado buckets...anyone have any experience putting new seats in the truck....
sorry for the rambling.

Re: project shorty 84
Looking good. I must say I'm a little jealous. I want a 5.3 or 6.0 so bad I can taste it. Keep up the good work though and keep posting pics of the progress. Oh yeah, welcome to the board.

quick question.....what are drop in cab floors vs non drop in on lmc?

Re: project shorty 84
Nice project! I'm partial to low 84's myself. You could always try getting the panels from a forum vendor. They have good prices.

Re: project shorty 84
its hard to tell in pics man. i'd start with both EXTENDED size floor pans and go from there. i didntthink mine was that bad till we got in there and decided to "make sure" we got it all and i ended up reordering for the bigger size.

Re: project shorty 84
alright it is time to start figuring out how to put this 5.3 and 4l60e in my truck...i have been getting some help on the fuel issues from glock (thanks)....
I am going to have tons of questions, and i would love to be spoonfed the info but that isnt fair to everyone who has done the hard work to find the info. I have been reading and reading and reading and just cant seem to put it all together. It is a 5.3 out of a 99 GMC 1/2 ton

Re: project shorty 84
CREDIT TO GLOCK FOR THE FOLLOWING
You will need fuel injection rated fuel line, filter, clamps, and of course the fuel pump. Try to use either as much solid line as possible, or stainless braided line. Try to keep FI rated rubber hose to a minimum, as in just connections. Supply line from the tank, to the filter, then the pump, then to the engine. All 3/8" (-6AN). Return straight from the engine to the tank. 5/16" (-4AN). Do you have two tanks? And if so, do you plan on keeping both operational?

Re: project shorty 84
Here are some pics of the motor, the previous owner must have had an exhaust leak and tried to take the manifold off and busted a couple bolts off.... I found this when i was stripping some things off the motor yesterday. I am going to get a left hand bit or something to get this one bolt out, but i can grab the other with a vise grips and turn out. Also there are some pics of fuel injector connections that i dont know how to get off?
busted off bolt. how do i get these connections off?

Re: project shorty 84
those clips have to come offthen there are 3 or 4 spring tabs in there to hold it togethter still, the clips are only a saftey thing, they dont actually hold the lines together, then you need a tool like this:
