Gas Tank Relocation
Has anyone relocated their gas tank? I'm considering pulling my "behind the seat" tank out and filling in the hole on the side. Looks like a new tank could be installed between the frame rails at the rear but before I do I would like to know if it's been done before and if I could get some pictures that'd be great too. My truck is a 1972 Stepside and I've got the whole body pulled off the frame now. I'm going to have a chrome sport bumper when it's all said and done. I was figuring just a fold down license plate for access to a filler tube. Now is a good time to do this if I'm going to do it.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Damn fine idea. Thanks for that. I'm printing this stuff so I can keep it at home and study it and gather up our parts. Probably be a while before we get to it but at least I can move forward with the idea of having my old tank removed and the filler hole closed up. Again...thanks for your help.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
I know there are a ton of pics of this done on the website but since u asked for some here you go. It was actually a simple install, just have to get the cross member out of the way.
I think these are the pics with my tires on wrong, but they have been fixed since then. haha

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
My son & I did a side marker fill with a Blazer tank. You can see where we relocated the gas fill neck so that it was a straight shot(no bends) so you can fill it up with the gas nozzle at full flow.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
I wanted everything on the outside of my '67 Stepside shaved clean so when I relocated the tank between the frame rails behind the Diff I specified a short vertical neck. The wooden bed was drilled for a 2 in hole and a deck fill fitting from a powerboat was installed flush with the bed.
the tank is also available with a side fill neck for the standard fuel door from either early classic enterprises (Stainless steel) or No Limit Engineering (Aluminum) |

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
The only prob with a bed filler is ya gotta worrry about the fuel hose at the pump not hitting your bedsides or bed rails when ya fill up, and what if you have something in your bed? I gotta sidemarker light filler in mine and I loves it! That is a pretty truck Fitz...

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
are these tanks install from the top or bottom? in other words does the bed have to be removed?

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
The only pic I could find of mine, you need the newer GM style filler cover hinge that swings in so your marker light will be flush. I tried to get a S-10 style door hinge to work so the hinge would flip the marker light up from the top but it was a PITA If ya go with a stock style tank you'll need to notch your bed support frame like this... Its hard to see, but there it is

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
As seen in the photos, it can be done, but if you reach out to board member "Yank", he put his filler behind the tail light and it is FINE. He's in Mississippi, so I got a first hand look at it before he painted the truck. Very slick.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Baby John, feel free to stop by my house in Puckett and look at mine. I did it behind the side marker using a blazer tank after reading what Jorgen did.
