Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
What do ya'll think? Tried searching for it last night on the net and could find an opinion, so what better place.
My thought process: Not looking for a lot of power just equal to better than what my 292 was putting out. Needing an overdrive for my 4:11's and want the manly feeling/sound of an 8 LOL. oh yeah it was only 150 more for the motor and install, if put in with the tranny. Please tell me what you think. |

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
If you're gettin it cheap, sounds great! I personally wouldn't have chosen a 305, but a V8 is definitely better than the I6, imo. If you have the option, though, I'd get a 350. If you're feelin froggy.... well, look at my sig.

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
If you're going to the trouble of the V8 swap, I'd recommend going straight to the 350. You can pick one up for the same price, and you'll get better power, exhaust note, and a good platform for further building when the time comes. Look for a 350 from a 96-00 Silverado/Sierra with vortech heads... they run forever and are great on a budget. Have fun with the swap!

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
I would do an LS install....better mileage/reliability etc. A nice 5.3 with a 4l60e trans with under 75K miles, you could get for under a grand$.

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
well i'm in TN and i've been looking around and couldn't find a 350 or an LS that i wouldn't have to rebuild. And the Rebuild, seeing i dont honestly have the knowledge to do myself, doesn't really fit into my budget, and isn't practical for me right now. I really don't know if i could've found a more reliable source for 150 bucks.

Price, availability, and skill level are all very good arguments for the 305. Either way, you're goin with a V8.

Get it done. Yes a 350 is nice but a properly tuned 305 will get good mileage and with those gears should have plenty of go. Good luck with your truck. When you get it together cruise up and say hey. We love company.

A local salvage yard has an '04 2wd Silvy 5.3/4L60e combo takeout that includes EVERYTHING needed for a swap with 72k miles on it for $800, and they can barely give away the 5.3's w/o accessories.

Locally in our Kansas area. 5.3s with auto trannys are around $1500 with the computer inclided.

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
A 292 is a better engine than a 305.
305's are good for making ricers look fast. Seriously... don't do it.... either go 327/350+, or stick with the 292. At least a 292 is cool Last edited by Jim_PA; 12-03-2009 at 01:13 PM. |

Seriously....
stock 305 220HP/200tq. stock 292 215HP/215tq. I bet the 292 has a better curve too. |

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
I guess people thought v8 was all the rage. They never stopped making inlines (OK, there may be a gap...) but all the way into the 80's (and even today...) they still make inlines.

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
what's the advantages of the 305 over the I6? I know the I6 is a more efficient motor... right? Sorry don't really know much about motors. thx for the enlightenment!

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
I've owned/been around too many TBI, Vortech, TPI, and LSx vehicles to mention, and one of the best sounding STOCK engines was my '91 Silverado with TBI 305, Flotech shorty headers with glasspacks and 4"x24" SS slash cut tips. It was by no means fast, but man it sure sounded nice. Hell, any V8 will sound better than a V6.

I vote for a 350 over a 305. A better power curve and overall performance capabilities.

Re: Throwin a 305 and a 700r4 in my 68
i'd stick with the big boy 292 and hop it up a bit (they have 4 barrel manifolds for these) but if you need a new engine anyway, a 305 would make a great stepping stone. my dad replaced the tired 350 in his 72 burb back in the 80's with a 305 out of a '77 monte carlo. he installed a camaro oil pump, an rv grind cam and rebuilt the stock 4 barrel as well as upgraded the ignition to electronic (hei). we used it to pull our 71 holiday 6,000 lb camper all over the place.
i'd prefer a 305 to the 307 in my 72 burb because it has the longer stroke from the 350, just small pistons which make for a more efficient power plant. i'd love to do a stroker kit in a 305 and work the cyl heads for better flow. but i have my bad boy 406sbc to go in my truck. i have a 3/4 ton with the 4.57 rear gear (i have the 3rd member to swap to a 4.10) so i feel your pain on fuel economy as my best on a tank has been 11.1mpg. i want to add the (rare) factory OD unit to the saginaw 3 on the tree eventually and that with the softer rear gear should get me in the 16-18mpg range. right now the truck screams on the highway and even around town it has too much rpm, even with that puny 307. we still have that old holiday camper and i will be hauling it around everywhere with my burb next summer!!
