About to have the Whole Cab Dyna-Matted for Sound Deadening

Last week, when I had my security system/remote start, power locks and windows installed, I asked for the installer to line the inside of the doors with Dynamat, just because he had to take the doors apart anyway, and the cab of my truck is loud, loud, loud.

I was very impressed with how well that worked. From the outside of the truck, you can knock with your fist on the door panel, which sounds like a muted thud, and then knock on the front, fender/quarter panel, and it sounds like you're throwing a rock at a tin can inside of a damn hollow cave! The difference is astounding. He used Dynamat extreme, and he knows how to do it correctly.

So now, there's one little problem with the remote start that I won't go into, but I need to take it back to the installer to get it corrected, and I'm so hyped up about this sound deadening thing that I'm going to just leave it there and have the whole cab Dynamatted.

-Already in both Doors
-Front Firewall
-Under the Hood
-Cab Floor, under the carpet
-Rear Wall of the Cab
-Ceiling, "underneath" (on top of) the Headliner

All skinned in Dynamat Xtreme
Labor + Material = $450

I wouldn't attempt this by myself, for fear of screwing up the screw/clip/tab alignments on everything, messing up the wiring underneath the dash, returning the headliner to proper position, and cleaning up the back wall correctly after applying the Dynamat. Basically, I would only trust myself to do the hood. That's it. But to have a pro do this for $450? That's a no-brainer, and pretty soon my '78 K10 is going to sound like a Lexus on the inside!

I just did my cab floor and back wall and it makes a huge difference. I used a thing called Fat Mat and did it myself. I am going to do the doors when i have them apart for new seals and the roof when I find a headliner I want. It is well worth it IMHO.

Word of warning- FATMAT is cheaper, but if you have it on the doors or the ceiling, it will end up falling off when the temperature gets too high, or when it gets really cold and then heats up fairly quickly.

I looked at using FATMAT myself, to save money, and I got word from a bunch of credible sources that it has a problem with falling off or coming unglued eventually.

That is the first thing I did to my truck. I striped it down and put it on the dash, firewall, floor, doors, and back of cab. I have always put dynomat in my vehicles for stereo systems and makes a huge difference. Feels like a new car riding down the road. The shops around here say to cover about 60% for results but I have always covered 100%, just finished my honda with 2000 watt stereo system with 15s and no rattles on the car. AWESOME stuff.

Did you do under the hood, and/or on the ceiling inside the cab?

I was getting my power locks and windows put in, and so I was like what the hell, might as well get the insides of the doors Dynamatted. Got the truck back, and it made such a huge difference that I wanted the entire thing done. I can't WAIT to drive this thing around now.

**Moderator- you can merge these two threads about this. I didn't meant to take up the whole board with my stupid sound proofing story. Sorry.

I did not do the roof because the guy that did the headliner said he would put it in when he put the headliner in. I didn't do under the hood, just inside the cab up the wall under the dash. I don't think the interior guy used dynomat but his own brand but the cab is still solid and quiet except the stupid vent windows.

im curious about how the stuff works with the windows down. really the only time i drive mine is during the summer. would it be worth it for just the summer time?

It still stops all squeeks and road noise in the cab and they make a heat shield type that helps keep the engine heat etc. from entering the cab area.

I will let you know as soon as I get it back and drive it around.

See, the effects that this has on stereo sound is just a nice byproduct, but what I really did this for is road noise, tire noise, and engine noise.

I'm just guessing, but I bet the effect will be that the sound deadener deflects a good deal of the sound down, to the road, where it then dissipates. If you consider that the Dynamat is on all of the undersides of my truck (under the floor, under the hood, and then on the firewall, which is the barrier between the two), the noise (sound waves) from the engine, road, and tires should all stay UNDER the cab for the most part.

Opening the windows shouldn't do much to hamper this effect, besides obviously that you're gonna get noise from the windows being open and the air passing through.
